Physics at Uni of York vs Aberystwyth - clearing question

I got into my insurance course at Aberystwyth but I also got an offer from York through clearing. I am struggling to decide between the two as I feel that York maybe has better graduate prospects and maybe a better reputation however it is very expensive. Aberystwyth Physics seems to have better student satisfaction and is cheaper so I don't know what is best to do. Does anyone have any suggestions or know anything about graduate prospects or thoughts on the physics courses at either of the universities ? Any help would be greatly appreciated !

The data has shown us that employers don't treat the uni you went to as a very important factor at all when hiring graduates. What matters far more is the degree classification you end up with. This is a lovely choice to have as well, congratulations.

You are right to focus on the course, I'd take a bit of time to do a bit more research and consider your options. When is the deadline for the York clearing offer?

hey there :hi:
Check out the forums for aberystwyth university and university of york as well as the forum for physics courses which might help you decide
Another thing re:those unis is Aberystwyth is quite isolated and remote in tems of a uni so do take that into account if you were hoping for a bit more of a city lifestyle when it comes to student life :yy:
Best wishes,

Hey @Tiny_

Firstly, congratulations! it's great to hear that you have received two university offers to study physics. You should be so proud of yourself!

Here are some important things to consider when choosing which university is for you:

Location - which location do you prefer - where is there more things to get involved with in the local area? does it matter how far away from home you are, or would you prefer to be at the university closest to home so that it's easier to visit home if you'd like to? What is the surrounding area like - is it in the city or a self-contained campus i.e is the campus spread out or all in one place?

Course modules - which university has more appealing course modules for physics - is there one in particular which appeals to you more? which aligns more with your interests?

Accommodation - are you guaranteed a place to stay in your first year? How much is accommodation?

Student support - what support is available to you as a student should you need it?

Career support - you mentioned about graduate prospects so it seems that you are interested in careers support - which universities seems to have a better support network for obtaining a career in terms of short-term (internships, volunteering, placements) and long-term (graduate role, entrepreneurship, etc).

Clubs/societies - which university offers the most appealing clubs/societies that you can get involved with? What's their Student's Union like? clubs/societies are the perfect way to make friends, and so it's important to choose a university which offers clubs/societies that match your interests.

You may also want to see what students are saying about the university by reading reviews, relevant statistics, day in the life blogs, checking out their social media to see if there's any student takeovers, etc.

I hope you find some clarity - I'm sure you will choose the right university for you!💗

The deadline is tomorrow at 9:30am.

I would have a cup of tea, go for a little walk if it's dry where you are.
It's a little cloudy here but still dry and quite humid.
Clear your head, decide what is important to you in a physics course. Then come back, talk it through with family, come to a decision later this evening.

You should be able to press "decline my place" and then add a clearing choice on UCAS this evening just as well as you can now :yep:

If you have more questions, come back to us :yy:

Hi @tiny_ in terms of stats Aberystwyth is Top 3 in the UK for student experience and for teaching quality - this was published by The Times and Sunday Times' Good University Guide 2024 - and has just been voted Top in Wales for Student Satisfaction by students in the National Student Survey. As you mentioned, Aberystwyth is definitely considered an affordable place to live in comparison with many other student towns and cities, and we're in the top 5 cheapest cities for student accommodation.

As for our physics graduates, many are now pursuing careers in meteorology, computing, geophysics, medical physics, teaching, or carrying out research in material physics and in astronomical, space and planetary sciences! So the options are quite diverse. Hope this helps!
Did you visit Aber and like it? I assume you did research into it as it is your insurance. If so, it is quite a tough decision to throw it over for a course at York, if you have not had time to fully investigate it as an option.
I am not saying you shouldn't but just be aware of having your head turned by stats.
