Exeter University Missed Offer

I sadly missed my offer to Exeter University today to study Economics. I'm totally gutted. I needed A* AA but got AAA + A Further Maths AS level. When looking at my exam marks I missed the A* grade boundary by 1 mark. The course, although advertised in Clearing, wasn't there first thing this morning.

Does anyone know if there will be spaces made available or now clearing is has been open for a little while everything has gone?? I don't know what to do.

I have another offer which I don't really want to accept as its so far away and has a much lower entry grade.

My question is also if I accept a clearing offer can I go back to Exeter if my review comes back with a higher grade, if that ever happens????

The answer to your last question is yes, a very big yes.

The other thing for me to say straight away is that the grades you have achieved are incredible
I hope you're proud of them and the journey you've been on?

Are the school doing a review of marking for you? Is it priority?

First thing to do now is tell Exeter that you are getting a review of marking done and ask them to honour your original offer if you meet the conditions. They should say yes to this. Ask them what the deadline is to meet their offer conditions is as well.

Look at what's available in clearing at other unis now for economics, start making phone calls to ask if they'll accept you. With your excellent grades, I suspect you're going to hear a lot of yesses.
Maybe @ExeterStudentRep or @UniofExeter Rep can help you out here as well?

Hello there, well done on those grades, that is a great achievement and I hope you are pleased with how you have done. I am sorry to hear that you did not meet your offer though and can appreciate you must be disappointed with this. Hopefully I can answer your questions below:

The courses advertised earlier in the Summer can change throughout the Clearing period. Post-results day we often find that a number of these will close so that initial list is often a loose indication and usually more extensive than results day itself (but not always thee case!).

On a related note Economics will not be in clearing for home students for the remainder of this cycle now.

If you get a remark and achieve your A* we will honour your offer- this year we need to receive remarks by 13th September. Where possible this will be for September 2024 start but depending on capacities could be deferred to September 2024.

You can apply for clearing places even if you hold a place to study. That place is safe until you release yourself on UCAS. You do not need to rush to do this, and I would always recommend waiting to do this until you have decided you want to accept a Clearing offer.

If later down the line we get your remark then this is not impacted by any clearing offers you hold. So there is no harm in applying through clearing in the meantime if you like.

I hope this answers your queries but do let me know if you could do with anything else being clarified. I hope that the remark goes well, fingers crossed for you.

Melody thank you so much for a quick reply
Thank you so much for your replies. I'm a little overwhelmed with the dilemma I'm left with today. I know I've achieved good grades but it just doesn't feel good right now.

Just to be clear, if I accept a clearing offer and my remark comes back I can still have a place with Exeter?

I don't want to do the wrong thing 😓

Yes you can
On UCAS you'd be able to press "decline my place" to the offer that you've secured in Clearing and Exeter would be able to reinstate your original offer. :yy:

Calling up to inform Exeter just means you're kept on their application system

Results days is such a turbulent day - it is completely understandable that you feel the way you do. I am sure everyone in this thread is sending you a virtual hug. I hope you managed to get some rest night and managed to switch off from processing and thinking about what to do, even for just a little bit. Hopefully in a few more days when things have fallen into place you can take the time to reflect on what a good set of grades you achieved, a result of lots of hard work, that will put you in a good place for your next steps.

That is absolutely correct - drop us a line at [email protected] if you haven't already advising you are getting a remark. When it comes back, if it gets you the uplift you are hoping for email us again with a copy of the transcript with the results and the team will be in touch with what we can do. We will honour places that we hear about before 13th September; I need to caveat this by saying that technically we might only be able to provide a place for September 2025 if it is one of our capped programmes, but rest assured you will get a place at the University of Exeter if you meet your original offer. This will not be impacted by accepting a clearing offer - as 04MR17 said, you are able to release yourself through UCAS or you can also contact that university if it is a little bit later down the line to say you want to withdraw. If at any point you aren't sure what to do call us (0300 555 6060 (UK callers) or +44 1392 723044 (international callers) or your Clearing university and we can advise what you need to do.

Something I would say practically is if you continue to get yourself set up at your Clearing university (which is a good idea, because you don't want to miss out if this is where you ultimately go) just be conscious of signing any accommodation contracts committing you to paying. Delicate balance between continuing to prep and just ensuring you don't get yourself into a bit of a situation needing to find someone to take over your accommodation tenancy for a year.

Final thing I will say is that yesterday was a bit of a rollercoaster - and obviously you are really keen on Exeter. However, do take up opportunities to find out more about your Clearing university. There will be teams of people eager to talk to you and answer questions and there might be a chance to visit before you start. It might not have been what you were planning, but you might just find that it actually suits you very nicely, and with a couple of days to process it might just start to appeal a bit more. It is never a guarantee, but if you throw yourself into societies you will be sure to meet lots of lovely people with similar interests, and hopefully by Christmas time you might reflect and think you couldn't imagine being anywhere else. University is often what you make of it, so if you go in with a open mind and lots of enthusiasm I am hopeful you will enjoy wherever you end up.

Sorry for the essay - hopefully some of this is useful! Best of luck, and do just ask if there is anything else I can help with.
