If I get into a uni then don't go will I get student debt?

I've got an offer for a course I'm happy with through clearing, however all ensuite accommodation had been booked in advanced by firm choice students. The uni have put me on a list to have priority if any opens up for medical reasons, however if it doesn't I will be unable to attend this year. If I add the uni on my UCAS form will I get charged student loan for this year even if I end up unable to go? I would withdraw as soon as possible, but the uni told me accommodation could open up anytime up until and including the first few weeks of term, and I thought I might already be getting charged for my course by that point?

A few things need to have happened (but it depends on the uni)

1) You would have needed to put course information on your student loans portal
2) You would have needed to enroll
3) You needed to have 'been in attendance' from a certain date (usually late September)

If you haven't done these then you shouldn't get it 'used' up.

Hey @College student2 👋

I hope you are well.

It's great to hear that you have received an offer for a course through clearing. It's a shame that there are no on-site accommodation options available at the moment, I wonder if the university could recommend any other accommodation providers nearby so that you wouldn't have to wait a year to join?

It's difficult to say about the student loan as university policies sometimes differ. I would suggest reaching out to the university again and expressing your concerns to see what they advise.

Fingers crossed that you get a space in the accommodation!

Hey there,
Congrats on your offer! Where will you be studying?

We highly recommend looking at some other private owned student accommodation! Usually these mirror what uni student halls offer, and are available to book straight away without waiting for uni allocations. If you are studying in a Student Roost city i would be more than happy to support you on this! Find & Book Student Housing in 22 UK Cities | Student Roost

Wishing you the best of luck

No student finance will be paid until you enrol on a course (usually during freshers week) and your uni confirms your attendance. Have you looked at any private uni accommodation options? Which uni is this for?
