UCL vs KCL psychology Bsc HELP!!!

I need help!!! My place for psychology bsc at Kings college London was confirmed this morning and I was really happy. Suddenly I saw UCL had clearing spaces available and thought to apply straight away since I was initially dettered from applying since they demanded more than 1 science and I only had alevel psychology.

After a few hours I have just been offered a place at UCL psychology Bsc and have been given 48 hours to decide.

Now I’m in a bit of a dilemma. Of course UCL is better in terms of ranking and prestige but I haven’t been to the open days etc as I wasn’t even dreaming of getting in. On the other hand, I have been to the KCL applicant day and it seemed really nice and it’s placement year and connections with the IOPPN attracted me.

It’s a dream that UCL gave me an offer but I’m scared of what I’ve been told in terms of how strict it is, how there is no uni life and that it isn’t as preferable for my future career in pursuing clinical psychology.

I don’t want to just listen to rumours but want to hear everyone’s opinions and advice on what they think I should go for.

Please help me

Hi there

I think the first thing to investigate here is why KCL is better for getting you into clinical psychology is it the course or the opportunities they offer, placements for example?

Also I know in the grand scheme of things KCL and UCL are pretty close together geographically, but what is your accommodation situation? Would switching to UCL affect this at all?

I would be commuting from home either way.

I’m not sure but I’ve heard great things about both of them which is why I’m stuck

Ah ok that's one thing we don't need to worry about then.

Is it just the prestige of UCL that is giving you doubts about King's?

If KCL will give you a placement year and UCL won't, then the experience you'd gain on that placement year is likely to be far more useful for going into clinical psych than any (largely imagined) extra prestige at UCL.

I’ve just been told that UCL is all around better and higher on the league table for psychology.

The prestige and ranking is probably the biggest reason if I’m being honest

All around better for what? Does it also offer placement years?

No it does not unfortunately.

Then that is one big way in which KCL is measurably better, especially for someone who thinks they'd like to do clinial psych after

KCL and UCL aren't that different in reputation to prioritise that over meaningful differences to the course!

So you think they are both equally reputable?
Note that I've heard that UCL psychology actually has a rather bad culture in the department and is not that great for student support. So I would be careful giving up a place on another course that is as good by all accounts academically within that subject area.

Unless you want to go into investment banking or management consulting after graduating I can't see, even aside from the allegations of issues within the department I've heard, that it really offers you anything above and beyond what KCL do.

What have you heard regarding the Ucl vs KCL department?

Exactly as stated, that apparently the culture in the UCL department is a bit toxic and that they aren't very good at providing (pastoral) support to their students. I've not heard anything specific about the KCL department in that regard.

My understanding is that both are very strong in the field academically.

Obviously your experience may vary though!

Yeah I’ll take that into account xx

For most purposes, effectively yes.
Hi, I’m in the exact same situation and decided to go with UCL because that was my initial first choice. May I ask what you decided to go with?
Every single psychology course is BPS accredited, makes zero difference where you go.

I think it's amazing there was even vacancies for UCL Psych when it's always over-subscribed in all previous years. I know it's past 48 hours, so you may already have decided. So it wouldn't matter by the time you read my post.

I'm a MSCi Psych student at UCL. My first year modules were exactly the same as BSc Psych students (except for that one elective module we could all choose). My first year had been great and it is not true that students in Psych are not well-supported. 100% untrue. It is YOU who have to approach for assistance. No one is going around the room to offer you assistance if you don't initiate. I had not felt being unsupported. It's an amazing course. It can be quite hard going for those who hadn't taken Math at A levels but this is not to say it is impossible. I have several BSc friends who managed just fine. The module that requires math is Introduction to Statistical Methods (PALS0046) where there is data analysis and R programming. First year dives straight into psych research.

By ranking and reputation, UCL outranks KCL. That said, whichever university you choose, I am sure you will like either course and learn a lot.

PS: forgot to comment on social life. UCL students know how to balance work and play.

I disagree. I think some universities are stricter in marking and to attain a first requires a lot more work and studying.
