going into A-levels, medicine question

I am going into year 12 this year and I feel that I didn't get the GCSEs that I wanted. since there is a lot of competition for medicine, do i still have a chance to apply for medicine?
Is there any university that doesn't look at GCSE results?
If anyone got into Medicine that was in a similar situation, what did you do?
thank you

If you don't mind, could you share your GCSE grades for Maths and English Language?

Post your stats in this thread after reading the first post the summer before year 13:

Make sure to do this after you sit your UCAT. Have a look at the post above by TSR Hippocrates to get an idea of the different threads available to you

ok thank you
however what I'd like to know is that is it worth taking the route and doing medicine specific A-levels and the UCAT and so on if my GCSEs aren't all 8s and 9s like most medicine applicants?

Are you able to come back here once you receive your results? It's difficult to advise without them. I personally think it should be possible, but there's no harm in waiting until you receive them to make a decision!

As long as you get a 6 in maths and Eng Lang then your chances will depend on A level predictions and UCAT. If you don't get this, you would probably need to resit them

no I will definitely get these but my question is in regards to the competition, do I have a chance?

As I say, that depends on A levels and UCAT, and you don't have those yet, then interview performance, which is an unknown. Your GCSEs are unlikely to mean there is nowhere you can apply, if you have a good enough UCAT

Perhaps its best you stop asking if you have a chance until you get your GCSE results today?? Not all medical schools look at GCSE across the board in all subjects, just the core subjects.

I've seen some universities like Newcastle that do a thing where they rank your GCSE results and give them a scaled scoring out of 40. Then they do the same for A level predicted grades and UCAT scores.

Whichever scaled scoring is higher out of GCSE results and A level predicted, that's the one they go with.

So if your GCSE results are lower than your A level results then they will choose your A level results because that's your most recent potential, as opposed to something you did at 15/16 years old.

Some universities don't even look at predicted grades at all but they will look at how other people in your year group did and compare your results to theirs. If you did higher than most people at your school, it's very likely that they'll like you.

Hope your GCSE result went well today.
I have just received by GCSE results back I managed to get 7 9s and 4 8s in English lit, language, Spanish and Further maths. Should I even consider applying to do medicine at Cambridge or even Oxford if they are so heavy on GCSEs? Some people in my school did better than me in their GCSEs and I feel like I really did not do my best. For A level I am planning to do maths, biology, chemistry and history, but I might drop history depending on how it goes. Any tips for my A levels and the overall application process?

Cambridge doesn't score your GCSE, Oxford does. A subjects looks good and broad.
