Oxford - Food + Univ

i've been looking at oxford colleges and the whole picking process is so confusing. I was looking at Univ and a lot of what it had seemed to work well for me, but the food budgeting given on the website is extortionate compared to other colleges. I was planning on self catering anyway, so would this even matter all that much? or are univ known for not having good student access to self-catered kitchens

You could always choose St. John's College? 😀 lol Because they have the cheapest food and rent. 😉

I wonder which subject you're applying to study at University College? 😧

I can vouch that John’s is the best college and has sensible food and accommodation costs (plus you get your own fridge in your room and you have a shared kitchen, so self-catering is possible).

However, the OP’s course may not be offered at St John’s and so it may make sense for them to look elsewhere.

I personally would consult this first: https://apply.oxfordsu.org/colleges/suggester/

How big is the fridge? Large enough for a bottle of Coke Zero? or a pack of 8 cans of Coke Zero? As well as perhaps a gallon of milk? 😧 lol

It’s one of the small models of fridge, but you can definitely fit 8 cans of coke zero in it. I have tried putting a 2L bottle of coke in mine before, but the shape of the bottle means you can’t fit it in and have the door shut, annoyingly.

As for a gallon of milk, you could probably fit that in the fridge if you are prepared for it to occupy (most) of the space.

That said, in each shared kitchen, there is a larger communal fridge and if you are on friendly enough terms with your neighbours, your extra stuff in there *might* be safe.

That's great news! 🙂 330ml Coke cans fit inside the fridge and so must 500ml Coke bottles?

Yes, indeed. You can fit a couple of each in there.

I'm pretty sure my course (Physics) is offered there, so I'll take a look! Thank you. Not a big cola fan anyway so I should be fine LOL!

Yeah, John’s does offer physics.

Again, look at the link I attached and see other suggestions, too.

There should be an open day in September and so visiting some of these colleges might be an idea, if you can.

I don’t even go to John’s and I think it’s a great college lol, they have LOTS of money so food etc is heavily subsidised.

St. John's College, Oxford also has a recently completed huge library with 120 study desk spaces and copies of all essential undergraduate textbooks. It is so beautiful. 🙂

Univ has a decent number of kitchens - especially in the north Oxford annexe where lots of students live in their second year, and if you are in the Goodhart building which has been modernised. It is better than some colleges that way.

I think it’s a lovely college and very beautiful.
