clearing nightmare x

ok so i had an offer for a russell group to do law at AAA. i got bbb. i was between 2-5 marks off an A in all my subjects. my firm instantly rejected me, and after having called them to tell them i just applied for remarking, they essentially didnt care and said they had already given my place to someone else (bear in mind this was literally like 8.45am). so i have spent the whole day clearing. ive gotten into some v v good unis to do a course im not interested in rly but i can do a law conversion after. and most decent unis that i could have easily gotten into with my predicteds or my post remark results (bc surely i gotta go up in at least one subject) immediately have said they cannot accept me on my grades. so what do i do? do i go to a v highly rated uni and do a subject im not very passionate in, or like wait a year or resit or something someone please help me escape this hellhole dear god
Firstly, congrats on your grades, they might not be as good as you were hoping for but you should be proud of yourself! 🙂

Secondly, congrats on the offers you have managed to do today! Are the courses you have offers for a huge difference from your original one? Sadly uni's won't usually, if ever, wait for remarks to come through. When you have them you could try and get in touch with them to see if there is space from drop outs etc but obviously there is no guarantee for that to happen and is extremely rare.

Have you looked outside of the 'top rated' unis? As depending on the course going to a top rated uni isn't always as good as it sounds.

instead of law they are for a mix of two of my alevel subjects, which i did v much enjoy but i just didnt envision myself ever studying them at a degree level so i rly got to start prepping myself haha. i did have a look outside top unis but my english tutor said that based on my super high gcses and the likelyhood of my remarks giving me aaa it wouldnt rly be worth it.

If your remark means you meet the offer, the Uni WILL honour your offer.
Phone back tomorrow, ask to talk to someone who knows what they are doing.

A levels matter for future law applications so resits seem to be the only option.

This is not usual Uni practice - and I suspect that whoever took your call was inexperienced.
Phone Brum tomorrow and be persistent.
Hi toastyfrog23,

Congratulations on your results, you should be super proud of yourself! I am terribly sorry that you have had a tricky time through clearing today that is such a shame. I just wanted to drop you a reply in order to give you some reassurance. I know you had your heart set on studying law, especially as an undergraduate, but please don't be disheartened or let this hinder you. I, a Theology and Middle Eastern Studies student, also wanted to study law and become a solicitor; my dream certainly has not changed. Since speaking to lots of professionals, solicitors and barristers, lots of them actually advised me not to study law as an undergraduate. Instead they suggested that I should do a subject I have a passion for so that I could excel and get a really good grade. Plus, not taking law as an undergraduate and doing the conversion means you develop two skill sets and perhaps you could even say completed two degrees! Thus, please don't let today mean you lose sight of you dream, everything happens for a reason.

Best of luck with your next decisions and for the future,
Sophie, University of Exeter Student Ambassador.

Seeking advice on this - apologies I’m not sure why it ended up with #healthcare - it’s regarding A Levels so think I’ve posted it in the wrong thread. https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showpost.php?p=99792951

As above. Notify Birmingham formally that you are getting your results remarked and expect them to honour your offer if you meet your conditions.
Do the same for your insurance choice.
Universities have to be explicit in their offer letters/offer holder information if they aren’t able to consider timely remark information (for example Scottish universities with early start dates make this clear).
What other universities have you looked at in clearing for Law?
Personally I wouldn’t recommend doing a degree you’re not enthusiastic about. It’s not something that is going to lead to an enjoyable experience at university or a particularly good degree result.

I’m not sure I’m posting my question in the correct thread (parent here still finding way round student room). - be grateful if someone could help with my query thank you. If you’ve got into your 1st choice (and are ecstatic about that) but unhappy with one of your A level results how does it work??Do you notify the University you are getting a remark? Do not want to risk Uni offer! Scored full marks on one paper, another paper high marks, 3rd paper unsure if was disadvantaged. The school had not finished teaching the topic for one of the speaking cars options. Slightly panicked when saw out of the 2 choices they get this topic was one of the cards. Felt forced to pick the other topic which wasn’t an easy image to discuss. Frustrating because IRP near perfect too. School advise can remark but unlikely to change due to the topic/card. The mark scheme is out of 60 (120 weighted) - need 4 marks to move up - would have to lose 20 marks to move down. Was it a disadvantage that card choices included a card on a topic not finished yet in school ? Thinking ahead would not getting an A*/A impact applications for internships/work placements and Masters in the future ? Thank you

If your 'child' has a definite place then you dont need to tell the Uni about any remark - any adjustment in the grades will eventually be fed to the Uni online via UCAS. Yes, some new-grad schemes etc for Banking, Law and other very competitive careers, do use A level grades as an additional application filter, so an A* instead of an A might be worth a remark. In the longer term of course, having a degree trumps A levels every time and no-one will be the slightest bit interest in A levels for a Masters application.

The chances of an increase in 3 subjects is extremely thin. I really think you need to look at other options. I have looked at what is shown as available for Law and Cardiff is shown although requiring higher grades but it might be worth a call as if they havent filled their places by now they will probably accept dropped grades.

Oher than that it is looking at a gap year, taking another subject or looking outside the Russell Group.

Thank you so much for the advice.
You could take a gap year do some work and save some money for university then apply with achieved grades and you know you’ll get in have a nice bit of experience if not in a law office at least in a job.

Hi there!

First of all, I just wanted to say that BBB is a huge achievement - please make sure you do give yourself some credit, A-Levels are so difficult.

It is still possible to get into law via clearing! Lots of universities have places still available, see the following link: UCAS
I would recommend waiting for your remark to come back, and if that doesn't change your grades, have a look on clearing. Keeping yourself motivated on a course you don't enjoy can be incredibly difficult, as degrees require you to do a lot of reading, a lot of writing, and a lot of research around your degree topic.

York St. John is one of the universities with clearing places still available for law. If you'd like to speak to our clearing hotline, it is open 9-5 until Wednesday, August 21st, 9-4 from Thursday, August 22nd. You can call us on 01904 809 700. See the following link for our law courses in clearing.YSJ Law Courses - Clearing

I wish you the best, take care😊
