Re-mark for better results?

Hi! Wanted to ask if it is worth re-marking one of my subjects eventhough I have managed to be accepted into a unviersity to study economics. I was 7 marks off grade A in AQA Economics, so I'm wanting to send off one of my papers that scored quite low, but I'm not sure if it's worth it. Initially I thought probably not since I have gotten into university, but talking with my boyfriend who is a first year uni student, he said it would be better to have an A rather than a B, especially in first year when you are applying to firms. So I'm asking for any advice? Without the remark I would have A*BB, hopefully with the remark it would be A*AB. Thank you!!

If it doesn't effect getting into uni, why not get a free copy of your paper back (some schools charge an admin fee) and have a look to see if it feels likely to go up? You might find a teacher at your school happy to take a look and see if it will go up. You can then make an educated decision as to whether to get a review of marking (not a remark, only checks the marking is reasonable)

What happens if they do not judge that the marking is reasonable? does it then go for remarking?

So although this sounds strange, they basically remark it in order to decide if it is reasonable. Each question on a paper has bands they are marked in - these bands can be different number of marks wide, eg. a 2 mark question will probably have 2 bands 1 mark "wide", whereas a 25 marker might have 5 bands 5 marks "wide". When it has been remarked then they look at each question in turn. If the new mark is within the same band as previously then it does not change mark (i.e. the mark is reasonable). If the new mark is in a different band then it will be amended to the new mark regardless of whether that is up or down.
This is done for each question and the result you will get back is the total increase or decrease compared to the original mark (eg. if one question increased by 2 marks but another decreased by 2 marks then the total difference would be 0)
Let me know if that doesn't make sense

Oooh, yes this does make sense thank you. So for example, if the original mark for a question was 22/25, which lies in band 4, and the revised mark for the same question is 23/25, which also lies in band 4, will they not count this additional mark? Do I understand correctly that they will only consider marks that meant you jumped up or down a band in a question? Thank you!

Yes that's correct
But if 23/25 is in band 5 then you would get the additional mark

Ooh I understand, thank you so much. In that case Im not sure if it its likely I'll receive the 7 additional marks. I have a few options for what kind of reviewal I want, one costs around £8 and the other around £60 lol, so I'll find out which one I need first. If it is the one for £60 its quite a big gamble - my economics teacher advised a remark but yeah. Again thank you so much for the help!

If I'm correct, the £8 will be a clerical check - that only checks that all questions were marked and added up correctly
The review of marking does as I described
Before either of those I would recommend what should be a free priority copy of your script so you can have a look and see if it's worth either of those - as you say, £60 is a big gamble!

Ask for a copy of your exam script and ask a lecturer to go through it to see if they could find the additional marks you will need if so send it off but you have until 20th September to do this so no rush

Oh right I see, in that case I'll definitely get the copy and send it to my teacher to decide whether it is worth it. Thank you so much for the help again 🙂

Hello! Thanks for the advice, I have decided I'll get a copy to send to my teacher to see if it is worth it. Thank you!

Hi its me again! sorry to be a bother, so I just wanted to outline to you what the different review of results (RoR) services are on the post-result service sheet that was given to me by my school:

RoR Service 1: Clerical-rechek (£9.05)
This service will include the following checks: that all parts of the script have been marked; the totalling of marks; the recording of marks; special consideratin has been applied; grade boudnaries are correct

RoR Priority Service 2: Review of marking (£57.85)
This is the same as Service 2 below (I haven't included this), but the review is conducted as a priority by the awarding body. This service is only available for GCE A-level qualifications if a student has a university place pending

So if I wanted a re-mark should I pick Service 2? Or is it the thing where if I choose service 1, they will essentially 're-mark' it again, and go according to the bands. If they do not agree where the marks lie, then they will consider those extra marks... sorry for so many questions!

Yes you want service 2 for what we've discussed  The service 1 will only check that they did mark all the questions and that the marks have been added up correctly - no remarking of anything involved
