Please help me choose my offer

I've got clearing offers from York, Sheffield and Nottingham for Chemistry.
I have 48 hours to decide!!!! I have no idea where to go.

I would like to go into law/finance.

They are all good Unis and all have a sensible reputation for sciences.
Things to think about:

1) Do any of them offer work-experience / placements or study abroad - this adds heaps to your graduate CV.
2) Go onto YouTube and look at the campus tours for each one, and the tourist films for each city.
3) Compare cost of accommodation.

Thanks for your reply. I love the campus at Notts but for some reason it's dropped in rankings (30 CUG). Do you think it's still good for finance or law careers. I think it's considered semi target? Do you have any idea where york and sheffield size up for targets?

Rankings are essentially bunkum. They dont mean anything meaningful, employers mostly ignore them, and other Unis aren't impressed by them either. Importantly, they cannot tell you if you will like the course or enjoy being at that Uni.

Notts will always be a target Uni, and if its the one that appeals to you, then thats actually what matters.

Honestly, go to which uni you like the most. As you have to live there for the whole degree and look into which modules you'll learn in each. I would recommend, creating a pros and cons list as that really helps. But other than that, make sure the you are the forefront of your decision. As you are effectively the one enrolling. I hope this helps

Hi 👋

Well done on receiving those offers - you should be really proud of yourself!

Personally, I would go through each university and rank them against each other on the same criteria, I find this the easiest way to assist in these kinds of decisions.

I hope this helps,

Matt

Thanks 😊

You're welcome. If you're still stuck, here are some factors you might consider, depending on what's important to you:

Location - which location do you prefer? where is there more things to get involved with in the local area? does it matter how far away from home you are, or would you prefer to be at the university closest to home so that it's easier to visit home if you'd like to? what is the surrounding area like - is it in the city or a self-contained campus i.e is the campus spread out or all in one place?

Course modules - which university has more appealing course modules for your chosen course - is there one in particular which appeals to you more? which aligns more with your interests?

Accommodation - are you guaranteed a place to stay in your first year?

Student support - what support is available to you as a student should you need it?

Career support - which universities seems to have a better support network for obtaining a career in terms of short-term (internships, volunteering, placements) and long-term (graduate roles)?

Clubs/societies - which university offers the most appealing clubs/societies that you can get involved with? What's their Student's Union like? clubs/societies are the perfect way to make friends, and so it's important to choose a university which offers clubs/societies that match your interests.

Hi! I would say York, Nottingham, thgn Sheffield in terms of prestige. I really like York as well. Whereas I didn't really like Sheffield but then I'm biased lol. Are you considering doing a law conversion course after your degree?

Hi! Yh I am considering law atm which would probably mean I have to do the conversion course. Although I've heard it's not a requirement for the SQE, most likely I'll have to do it.

What don't you like about Sheffield?

I just didn't really like the feel of the city itself - obviously everybody is different but I just think the atmosphere of the town is important too when choosing a place to study fir the next three years.
But again it's just my opinion lol.

Hi @181100 !

Congratulations on your offers!

The three universities are all very good, and thus I can imagine how difficult it can be ultimately make a decision.

As @Tara753 and other users have noted, creating a list of pros and cons can be very helpful to help you decide which option is the best. I would argue that you should also have a look at the acommodation options at your disposal, the modules that will be studying and so forth.

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us!

Best of luck,
Abián.

I go to Sheffield and couldn't recommend enough. Don't listen to people telling you its not prestigious, I got 4 A*s at A level and am still absolutely being challenged academically - plus its a russell group! I do biochem so not quite chem but my course is brilliant and the uni is incredible - I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else. Visited york, hated it - grey and drab, no colour, really (and I mean really) expensive compared to Sheff. 99p shots if you are into that  . I also visited Nottingham and as a woman didn't quite feel safe, dk if that matters to you. Please look up vids of sheffield on insta or youtube and you'll see what I mean! If u like nature as well, peak district is 3 miles from the Uni and I find myself there all the time 🙂 ask if you have any questions

Thanks for your reply. 4A* is crazy well done. Would you say the spilt between chem and bio is 50/50 in biochemistry? Also do you have labs each week like in chem? Also how are the facilties especially labs? Thanks
Well done. They are all very good and you are very lucky to have such a good choice. let us know which you choose . Good luck😀

Hi, so biochem is definitely mainly bio-based things, eg. molecular and cellular biology, some microbiology, genetics and then chromosomes etc, biochemistry (As a module, then later on in the course) is mainly proteins and then kinetics and thermodynamics of enzyme based reactions and then metabolism (biosynthesis, stuff like krebs and photosynthesis and respiration). Biochem is defo the chemistry of biology rather than the other way round or a 50/50 split but I love it that way, i think its a lot more practical and physical, tangible almost than just straight chem. In second year they split into biochemistry (kinetics and stuff) and biosynthesis and structures.
At sheffield I had 6h a week in labs in 1st year, 3h on two days. I love the labs in sheffield, they are defo my favourite part of the course!! I find practicals really interesting even when they are difficult, you get lots of help if you need it but equally very quickly feel independent and competent in the skills. There's loads of really cool equipment, including a cryo-EM microscope! (not many unis have that)
Let me know if you have any more questions!
