Query about final grades applying in 2025

Hello

I have achieved AAB this results day going into a gap year getting above my predicted grades

When I reapply to Universities in the 2025 intake, the Universities who listed their courses for AAA (and will in 2025) but accepted people for AAB, ABB this results day as their reduced offers... can I apply to those AAA Unis on the basis of the final grades I achieved and get the same result just having AAB?

And specifically with Law courses I feel as they are more oversubscribed/competitive this may not be the case and some difference say with a politics or history course - any difference with RG vs non-RG Universities? York, Durham, Exeter, Bath differences?

I feel that I am at a perceived disadvantage in terms of having final grades which does not give me the hindsight of predicted grades where they offer something lower on results day to the people who applied to X University

Please advice many thanks in advance

This is a tricky one.

Its tempting to assume that they might do the same thing next year and therefore that you might get an offer. However, achieved grades are always treated differently because there is no chance of getting higher grades, and each year is different.

I'd suggest that you phone your intended Unis and talk to them and/or go to some Open Days and ask the same questions. They may not give you a straight answer - because they can't give you any guarantees - but its still worth asking before you make you final 5 choices.
Hello TheSpecial,

Congratulations on achieving AAB in your A-levels! That's a fantastic accomplishment, and it's great to hear you're planning to reapply during your gap year. I have had a look on our website about the requirements for 2025 and you are totally right we ask for AAA, although, if you are subject to contextual offer, the requirements are AAB. I would recommend giving our admissions a call tomorrow, just so you can have some reassurance when reapplying to us.

Here is our telephone number:
0300 555 60 60 (UK callers)
(0)1392 723044 (EU/International callers)

Or you can also enquire here.

Ultimately, while there's no guarantee, your strong AAB grades still make you a competitive applicant! A curveball to consider may be studying a different subject at undergraduate and completing a conversion course after your degree, this is what I decided to do! I am about to start my masters in Sept. Perhaps when reapplying, you could have one non-law option.

Best of luck on your journey and future applications,
Sophie, University of Exeter Student Ambassador.
