How is Queen Mary University of London

So I have recently got accepted into QMUL for their mechanical engineering course and I will be starting in September 2024. I just wanted to know how the course is going to be. I know that QMUL is part of the Russel Group universities so it must be very reputable right?

Queen Mary's ascension into the Russell Group has been relatively recent and, well, the term Russell Group is a marketing ploy more than anything else.

I cannot speak for Mechanical Engineering per se but as a Queen Mary student myself, I can tell you that I like Queen Mary. I would be lying to you if I told you the university is perfect, but it tries. The most important thing to me as a student here is the ease at which I can approach my lecturers and ask things, and how quickly they reply to me. I'm unsure if it's the same for Mechanical Engineering but I gather this behaviour is widespread in all the courses.

The course is also accredited by the Engineering Council, which is a good sign too!

Is there anything in particular you'd like to know about the uni?

How is the uni timetable like? How early are the lectures because I will be living at home and travelling by train everyday

They try to condense all lectures into two or three days (but that may not always be the case). Earliest time a lecture can be is 9.00AM, but you might not have 9.00AMs every day

Oh right. Thanks for the info. I’m sure I will enjoy my time at QMUL

Well, they didn't send me a list, but to be fair my course doesn't need me to bring anything with me except for my device of my choice.

Queen Mary will send you several emails over the coming days. They will contain a lot of information and links to websites with even more information. It will be a lot to take in one sitting so, don't. It's super easy to feel overwhelmed with so much info being thrown at you so just read it in chunks, not in one overwhelming go. A lot of it will not be particularly helpful but a lot of things will be useful to know so I would at least skim-read everything and to not delete the emails in case you need to refer to it later - particularly the one you'll get on IT support.

The first week of Queen Mary is freshers week, obviously. You might have a couple of induction activities for your course but you will mostly be left to your own devices to do what you want. There will be loads of activities - you will receive a booklet through the post with all of the activities running that week, or you can check them on the Queen Mary Student Union website. You go to the things you want in freshers week, set up your room if you're moving into halls, meet loads of new people and just have a great time having loads of fun.

Depending on whom you are, the freshers week craze might carry on a little onto the second week of uni but by then you'll start having your first proper lectures. They'll be the easy stuff, just introducing the modules and whatnot, and this is a great chance to meet more of your classmates and start the building blocks of your friendships there. By the third week, you're now settling into uni life and getting into the rhythm of uni life
