stuck between my clearing choices - really stressed out.

I originally wanted to study Economics at UoB, however i missed my offer. i've managed to get 3 courses through clearing from the following universities:
Lancaster - Economics
Uni of York - Maths and Finance
Uni of Glasgow - Maths and Economics

i'm in a pickle right now because i'm wondering which of these universities will help me the most with opportunities/internships in the future for investment banking, some people were telling me that from these 3 they don't matter, i just need to do a masters after, but i just wanted to double check.

would be much appreciated if someone could give a little bit of guidance ^^

Hey @shyank 👋

I'm so sorry to hear that you missed your offer - you should still be super proud of yourself regardless for pushing through your exams and obtaining some great offers at other universities today!

The biggest piece of advice that I have been giving to people who are stuck between certain universities is to focus closely on each of the universities offerings, especially on things that are important to you. Here's some things to consider:

Location - which location do you prefer? where is there more things to get involved with in the local area? does it matter how far away from home you are, or would you prefer to be at the university closest to home so that it's easier to visit home if you'd like to? what is the surrounding area like - is it in the city or a self-contained campus i.e is the campus spread out or all in one place?

Course modules - which university has more appealing course modules for your chosen course - is there one in particular which appeals to you more? which aligns more with your interests?

Accommodation - are you guaranteed a place to stay in your first year?

Student support - what support is available to you as a student should you need it?

Career support - it seems as though career support is really important to you. Which universities seems to have a better support network for obtaining a career in terms of short-term (internships, volunteering, placements) and long-term (graduate roles)?

Clubs/societies - which university offers the most appealing clubs/societies that you can get involved with? What's their Student's Union like? clubs/societies are the perfect way to make friends, and so it's important to choose a university which offers clubs/societies that match your interests.

There may also be other factors that are important to you - have a real think about it, as you want to make sure that you choose the right university for you!

I'm sure that the decision you make will be the right one, trust your gut 😀

All 3 unis are great unis so its up to you which course interests you the most; studying economics is very different from studying maths and finance.

Hi

Congratulations on securing these clearing places! I am sure you will make the right decision and enjoy wherever you go!

Firstly, I would consider the course you want to take, as you have offers from 3 different courses; therefore you should look at the specific modules that the university provides, and decide which one you actually want to study.

Then you need to decide whether the university is somewhere you can see yourself at for 3 years. Lancaster is a gorgeous campus, with a beautiful city, as well as a good nightlife (in my opinion). Ofcourse, you may not have time to visit your universities, and may have not visited them before, but I would definitely research them, try and look at pictures, and decide whether you think you could imagine studying there.

When looking at post-graduate opportunities, Lancaster has a specific employment and recruitment service which can be used for a part-time job during your degree but also to help you make decisions afterwards. You can find internships, which would boost your CV and your skillset when applying to work in investment banking, as well as staff on hand to help with CV advise, interview practice, and to answer any other questions you might have relating to your future. I would really advise that you used this service because it is so beneficial, and was definitely a help for me when looking to secure legal vacation schemes and a post-grad job.

We also have a wide-range of societies, which are a massive part of university life, to help you make friends with people with similar interests. One of these includes the economics society, which again provide advice if you are wanting to go into the banking field, especially from both alumni and 3rd year students who may be trying to navigate the field for the first time themselves. This is a great opportunity to understand what you might need to go into investment banking, because I am sure that an internship would boost your application and stand you in good stead to get a job.

Hope this all helps, and good luck with your future!
