Clearing choices

Hi, so I have multiple clearing offers and am not sure which to pick. The course I originally wanted was Economics but I didn't meet my grades for LSE. My offers are:

Accounting and Finance at Uni of Bristol
Industrial economics at Uni of Notts
Economics at Lancaster
Economics at Glasgow

My decision is mostly based on which course would be better as I like the unis equally, Bristol and Nottingham a bit more than the others. Also, does anyone think it would be possible to switch from Accounting & Finance at Bristol to Economics & Finance once I'm there because that would be amazing.

Does anyone have any advice on which to pick??

Hey @convenient-obliv 👋

Firstly, congratulations on receiving all of these offers! It sounds like you've had a very productive results day.

If you have your heart set on studying economics and this is the course you're most passionate about, I'd definitely choose either Uni of Nottingham, Lancaster, or Glasgow based on the options you have stated. Whilst it seems that you are interested in Bristol, there's no definitive answer as to whether you'd be able to switch your course at this stage, so I'd probably lean more towards ruling this out.

You have stated that you prefer the look of Bristol and Nottingham more than the others... if Bristol is now ruled out, it looks like Nottingham may be the option to put forward.

It seems as though you have already done your research, but in case it's beneficial - here are some things I'd recommend considering when narrowing down your choices:

Location - which location do you prefer? where is there more things to get involved with in the local area? does it matter how far away from home you are, or would you prefer to be at the university closest to home so that it's easier to visit home if you'd like to? what is the surrounding area like - is it in the city or a self-contained campus i.e is the campus spread out or all in one place?

Course modules - which university has more appealing course modules for your chosen course - is there one in particular which appeals to you more? which aligns more with your interests?

Accommodation - are you guaranteed a place to stay in your first year?

Student support - what support is available to you as a student should you need it?

Career support - which universities seems to have a better support network for obtaining a career in terms of short-term (internships, volunteering, placements) and long-term (graduate role, entrepreneurship, etc).

Clubs/societies - which university offers the most appealing clubs/societies that you can get involved with? What's their Student's Union like? clubs/societies are the perfect way to make friends, and so it's important to choose a university which offers clubs/societies that match your interests.

I hope that you are able to gain some more clarity soon on which university would be best for you - I'm sure you will make the right decision. I would love to hear which of these you decide to go ahead with!

Hi thank you for replying!!

I've looked at the courses and I really don't mind doing accounting and finance, I'm just slightly worried about whether I could still do a masters around economics as that was my original plan.

Either way, I will probably be confirming Notts.

Thank you!

No problem at all.

Absolutely - you’d be able to do a masters in economics with an accounting and finance UG degree - they are relatable courses. Some people change their mind about their path completely whilst completing a UG degree and choose to do a masters in something unrelated. Id just check what the entry requirements are for doing a masters in the university you’re thinking of to be sure 😊

Good luck!

Hello @convenient-obliv !

Congratulations on your Clearing offers!

@WrexhamUniReps has outlined a number of factors which are indeed critical when it comes to determining where to study. However, I have seen that you are intending to firm Nottingham and, hence, we would be very happy to welcome you to University of Nottingham 🙂.

Hi @convenient-obliv !

Congratulations on your university offers! Another factor to consider alongside which course feels right for you, is whether you would prefer a campus or city university. Lancaster University is a campus uni which is perfect in First Year because, for the most part, everything you need is on campus, e.g., Spar, college bars, library, hairdressers, pharmacy, GP practice etc.

Here is a link to a campus tour of Lancaster University: https://features.lancaster-university.uk/lancaster-university-virtual-tour/ .

The main thing is that you make the choice that feels right for you, that you like the content of the course and can picture yourself at whichever uni you choose. 😀

Hi,
I am going to Sussex this Sept (Econ BSC / my insurance offer, as lower grades scuppered my firm)
If I were lucky enough to have a Notts offer, then that would be very tempting, as they have an excellent reputation for Econ, from what I've researched. If the Econ BSC standard course is the plan for you though, I'd look at Lancaster, but Glasgow is similarly very decent, just very far away/expensive to get home (for me). Good luck, you can't go too far wrong I think! Personally, Econ is my passion, so accounting wouldn't be for me, but you may not be so fixed - Bristol has the reputation / it would be a quality degree.
Good luck!
Chris

Thanks
