Resits

I got 4 A Levels, 2As and 2Bs, but missed Warwick Economics by not getting an A* in Maths or Further Maths. If I resit and aim to move a B to an A and an A to an A*, what would be my chances of getting into A Russell Group University like Bath, Nottingham, etc. I appreciate I won't get a look in at LSE, Warwick, UCL probably. I have a place offered at Lancaster University, but not too keen due to distance from London, where I live. Any advice or insight into other options would be appreciated.

Hey @Bmp51 👋

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get a place in Warwick, but congratulations on your fantastic results regardless - you did great!

Am I right in thinking that one of your Bs was in maths? It would be a lot of pressure for you to try to obtain an A* in maths by resitting, which is something to be mindful of.

Have you checked the entry requirements for the other universities that you are interested in? Do they all require an A* in maths?

Congratulations on obtaining a place at Lancaster University, but if you are hesitant due to the distance, it's best to continue looking for other universities that are closer to you if location is important to you, or resit your exam as you considered if you feel that this is the best option and the universities you're interested in all require A*.

There ae still places in top 20 Economics unis. For example, Loughborough are accepting ABB via clearing this year.

Hi

Congratulations on those results, because although you are disappointed they are amazing!

I think if you are really wanting to go to Warwick, then a resit could be the right decision for you. Although if you are looking at universities purely because they are Russel groups, then you need to decide why you actually want to go to such a uni. I would base your decision on the specific university, and whether or not you like the campus/atmosphere because you will be living there for at least 3 years.

Lancaster, although far from London has an amazing campus, as well as a place that provides excellent opportunities for students throughout their degree time. There are also excellent transport links to London; with many of my friends being from London or from down South, who find it easy to get a train down to London, taking only a few hours. Therefore if it is only the distance that is putting you off, I would work out how viable it is to get home, because I am sure it would be easy. Also, question how often you will be wanting to go home each term, as these are only 10 weeks long from October to December, meaning that most students will either choose to stay the whole time, or go home only once, if needed.

I would also look at clearing opportunities that would take your grades, because I am sure there would be some, if you decide that Lancaster is not for you, because ultimately the university you choose is personal to you, and although many students love Lancaster, it may not be for you. Therefore, I would advise you to look at some closer universities that might take your grades through clearing, as this might be an easier option than having to retake your exams.

I hope this helped, but if you have any more questions then feel free to ask away!

Thanks Katie, Very useful feedback and thank you for the compliment. We are coming to view the University on Sunday or Monday. Have seen some videos, and are impressed with the Uni on screen. Of all clearing spaces for Economics, Lancaster is the one of choice right now. Hopefully we can make the most of the visit and speak to some students and see the facilities in the short time we will be there.

Hi Lauren, thanks for your reply. Maths was an A, Further Maths B, Classic Civilisation A and Economics B. Spoke to Warwick about resit - they are not keen, as I'm sure most of the top 6-7 Universities wouldn't be. I would take a resit as I'm confident I could get an A* in Maths, but don't want to take the chance Warwick rejects me next year because "they don't like resits"! Having gone to many Universities last year, I had my heart set on Warwick. Hence my exploration of choices and options.
I resat this year and got a place at Notts. I also would’ve gotten one from King’s but I rejected their offer, so that could be good in terms of distance from your home?
It’s more than possible, but you definitely need to put in a lot of work!! Studying for an entire year can be very hard, and I’d highly recommend a tutor. But if you’re just wondering in terms of whether or not you’d get an offer, then the answer is absolutely! Just remember to ask your teacher to add something in their UCAS reference to explain your resit (shows resilience, grade boundaries were tough this year, etc etc)

Hi,

We still have places at YSJ on the economics course through clearing.
https://www.yorksj.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate/economics/

We have clearing advisors here till 5pm today, who can answer any questions about YSJ and clearing, alongside helping you with an application. We still have accommodation available through clearing.

Our number is: 01904 809700

Clearing hotline opening hours:

Friday 16 August: 8.00am to 6.00pm

From Saturday 17 to Wednesday 21 August: 9.00am to 5.00pm

From Thursday 22 August: 9.00am to 4.00pm
