alevel bio… the undercover devil

hi! im going to y13 in sept and do bio chem maths and after seeing results day today i am SO scared. wdym 251/300 for an a* in maths 😔 smart people scare me. but maths and chem im not particularly that concerned about since i have a nice revision method for both subjects. my main fear is flopping biology. tbf i’ve been getting constant B’s throughout the year until i got a C in june and I rlly want an A at the end, i thought bio would be my best subject but idk how to approach it at all and its stressing me out baaad. so ig my question is how does one acquire top grades in such a devious subject. any help is good help !!

I was also consistently getting B's throughout year 12 but ended up with an A* yesterday thank God.
The key to alevel biology is doing lots and lots of practice. Miss Estruch's videos on how to answer different types of questions are extremely useful and she has loads of free question packs (application qs, critical thinking qs etc) on her website I'm pretty sure. Alevel biology is so confusing and the mark schemes are so specific too but if you consistently practice you will get through it. I also recommend doing past papers and analysing them using MARCKS to see where you lost marks
Maths, Application, Read the q wrong, clarity of answer, Knowledge, Silly mistake
using this practice the types of questions you get wrong and most importantly ask you teachers for help!!
Biology Carol on youtube is also good, she does past paper walk throughs and seeing how she answers questions is really helpful.

I did AQA alevel bio btw

I may not of got top grades but something that helped me to understand more trickier content was drawing the processes. Id get A3 paper and draw the process i was revising like calvin cycle, synaptic transmission, nephron. And just drawing it helped me to visualise and see what happened so i could understand it better

I wouldnt do it for everything in biology as it can be fairly time consuming but id really recommend it for topics you find difficult like i found immunity difficult and it helped so much to see what was happening step by step

something also useful my school did was for long answer questions where you need to explain processes find the markscheme for questions like that and learn the answer how they phrase it in the markscheme. obviously don't only learn from the markschemes but it helped make it simpler and most of the time we didn't even need to mention detailed stuff we learned in lessons.

ooh i do this at times, i agree some bits of immunity really scared me, like hiv replication, so i like to draw weird stuff like that out, visualising things does make stuff easier

ooh, tbh i just mark the paper and note down what i did wrong, memorising the mark scheme is something i have been told but i dont know how to really approach it, but i will try to start with common long questions, i can already think of a few

coming from a previous year 13 take care of your health andddd slowly build up your work , its better to do bad at the start and do amazing at the end then to get a stars all year then get health issues and flop in the end

I will be so honest with u gyal (or guy), i got an E at the beginning of year 12, and right now im getting A's on mocks i take on my own and hope to get an A/A* in Sept, the only way to improve is exam q's like theres not cheat route like in gcses :frown: , esp with mechanisms just flashcards and questions. To do well in chem is to sadly also be good at maths, so id also focus on calculations if that as your bad point. i love allery chemistry and elliot rintoul on youtube aswell! very nice and quick vids for y12 content
