Laptop/Tablet for Mechanical Engineering!

Hi all,

In September I will be studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southampton. I am currently wondering which device I should buy to use alongside my studies.

At the moment I own a high performance pc which I plan on using for heavier tasks. I have seen that there are many people who use iPads to take lecture notes and was wondering whether this would be suitable to use alongside my PC? Or, would a laptop be more suitable?

Any advice from current students would be much appreciated! Thanks

Hi, didn’t do mech but a similar engineering. Our course was fairly split between iPads and 2in1 laptops. I’d go for a 2in1 if I could go back and buy one again since you can take notes and use it for autocad/solidworks/sims if you have to be in uni for group work or to make any updates away from home which the iPad isn’t as great with. They seem to be more flexible.

Thank you so much for that advice, I’ll definitely be taking it into account! I’d agree that it does make sense because then you have the screen to make notes but also performance that you can use with engineering software. 👍
