A-Level resit as a prospective law student

My A-Level results have been disappointing, I achieved BBC when I was predicted A*AA. I went through clearing and managed to get a spot at a university for law but I am unsatisfied with my results and believe that I can get to a better university so I am serio considering resitting my exams.

The two B grades I achieved were not far off from an A so I believe that I may be able to achieve it in a remark but I want to resist my sociology exams which I got the C in.

I was wondering how big of a disadvantage I would be at compared to 2025/2026 applicants if I chose to reapply in the next UCAS cycle.

I am considering applying to:
LSE
University of Nottingham
University of Warwick
University of York
University of Sheffield
University of Exeter
University of Manchester
University of Leeds

If I was able to achieve the two A grades in a remark, gain a high predicted in sociology and demonstrate that I have decided to resit to gain more experience in the field and for my own ambitions would this put me at a greater advantage.

Any advice would be extremely helpful.
Double check that these universities allow applicants from students who resit an A level. I know that for law, some universities are quite picky and don’t want applicants who haven’t sat all of their A levels in one sitting
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself . There’s no harm going through clearing now and asking if the unis ur interested in or don’t mind doing to, have spaces. I’ve got a few friends who were in a similar situation and they called up unis and were able to secure themselves a spot at pretty good unis for law despite not having the grades they anticipated cuz unis ultimately wanna fill up spots as much as poss and you never know
A-level grades are helpful ofc but they aren’t the bee all and end all of evrything.

With regards to remarks and resits as long you demonstrate improvement in your grades
and willingness and passion, maybe some work experience. your previous grades will not hold you back as much as u think if you choose to apply for the 2025/2026 cycle . There is always opportunities.

Best of luck with everything
Newcastle are accepting BBB via clearing so give them a call before resitting.

Depending on which A levels you studied, there is the option to resit independently in November (you may have to change from AQA syllabus to Edexcel or Cambridge). You will get you results by Dec so then you can apply before the Jan deadline knowing you have AAA or AAB.

Thank you for your help. I’m currently a student in London so I wasn’t thinking about moving as far as Newcastle but I will definitely check about possibly resitting in November and if any other universities have entry requirements similar to Newcastle.

Hi @rooypu

It is worth checking that each of those universities doesn't have a policy against resit candidates / A levels gained over more than 1 year. If they don't, then there will likely be no disadvantage from you resitting. I know from my experience, that if you have the grade, then universities won't mind in which year you obtained it.

Also, I would recommend getting that remark before making any concrete decisions about which to resit etc.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! Nice to hear that there is a chance that I could still get into uni if I decided to reapply next year

Fingers crossed it’s all good for you then! I know from experience that some RG unis for law do specify that all the A levels have to be sat in the same sitting, as I didn’t do all of mine in the same year
