Should I do more work experience

Hi, so currently I’m in the situation where I will now be resitting my A Levels as I haven’t achievered the grades for medicine. And I will be reapplying this October, however I was wondering if I needed more work experience to write about within my personal statement, I will be reapplying to a uni to which I applied last year and got an interview for.

Within my last personal statement I’d written about, Volunteering at a care home, Shadowing a consultant and volunteering at a hospital as patient support for 3 months.

That's very good experience. Ideally you'd want to find something a bit more recent too but this is fine and plenty of good experience

P.S.: check the unis you want to reapply to accept resits, because not all med schools accept them.

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your results. I think the more experience the better but remember to focus on studying for your resit.
I definitely wouldn't prioritise lots of experience over time to revise.
Best of luck!

Sorry to hear you didn't get the grades you needed to get onto your chosen medicine course. There are other pathways into medicine that you may not be aware of. At USW, we offer a course in Medical Sciences. The course is designed primarily for students who want to become doctors. Every year there are 10 places available on the A101 Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme at Cardiff University for suitably qualified graduates of this course. Our graduates are also able to progress to GEM at other universities. Whatever decision you make we wish you every success for the future.

Hi @morteamie!

Sorry to hear that you didn't get the expected marks. I believe having work experience is great and very beneficial. It is beneficial to you and how you then learn and also then work. When I did a placement, I matured a lot and it showed in my studies.

I think if you can manage it then do some more work experience as it is very desirable but also focus on your resists and make them a priority. 🙂

Hope this helps and good luck in your resits!

So you need to do a whole other degree, for 3 years, and then compete with all the other applicants for 10 places on GEM course? And GEM is far more competitive, requiring higher UCATs, generally, than standard entry.
This would take longer, be more expensive and more competitive than resitting and reapplying, would it not?
