BCU January intake

Hi, I've just accepted my offer at BCU for child nursing to start Jan 2025 (this wasn't my preferred option as I wanted to start in September). I was wondering that if places did free up in the September course since not everyone is going to accept the offer would they let us know and be open to moving people on to the course? As well as this I heard that January intake was mainly for international students or am I wrong? (i am not a international student)

Hi there,

Congrats on accepting your offer and for your place at BCU. 🙂

I have just enquired about whether there is possibility for you to change to the September intake if a spot becomes available - I'll let you know as soon as I have a response.

You will find that there is still a mix of home and international students for the January intake. I have a few friends on the nursing course who started on a January intake and it hasn't really impacted their time at university besides having a different start date, and their really enjoying their course.

But I also understand that you'd prefer the September intake if possible. I'll get back to you soon. 🙂

Hi omg im in the same exact position as u cos i hope to study adult nursing with foundation yr which starts in january. Issue is i can only do this course n i can’t do the sept intake cos my grades were too low for that. I still feel off ab starting in jan tho like im wondering if i will be given same opportunities as those who start in sept n if i will be able to make friends easily or if everything will be much harder n same w accom. I’m just rlly worried ab it all icl.

I have the same worries about accom aswell! I got an email saying that my acccom was at queen’s hospital and I called them to make sure and they then said that since I’m in the January intake it shouldn’t have been given to me now so they will reapply me for later this year and said it would be likely that the accom is the Heights which is not close to the city south campus at all 😭. Also I think I saw a post from one of the reps saying that there was a freshers week in January as well so maybe people like us have the same opportunity to socialise?

Hey @yayaayay1223

I completely understand your worries - I'm guessing most of this comes from the unknown aspect of starting in January.

Although the start date is different from the September intake, the course content, teaching, opportunities and your overall degree are the same, so try not to worry as from a course perspective there's no difference.

I understand it feeling a bit strange to start in January, especially when you're so used to a September start from school as well. But I think you'll start to feel more settled to the idea once you get started.

As for friendships, it might feel a bit awkward at first - but most friendships do! There are lots of student starting in January like yourself, so there will be lots of people in a similar position. Maybe a friendship could start with the other new Jan student in this thread? 😌

Any more questions, feel free to ask. 🙂

Sorry to hear your having some accommodation trouble too.

The Heights is probably a bit too far for City South Campus, although I do know a few people who live nearby who travel to Edgbaston. But I appreciate that staying there is not ideal. Usually the accommodation team offer accommodation to January intake students once their place has been accepted, meet the room criteria and if you've applied before 6th December - which I'm guessing you've already done.

Here is the Accommodation team contact in case you need it. You might have contacted them already, but I would possibly send over a message for some reassurance about accommodation if you're still worried about it.

@yayaayay1223 Maybe you might want to contact them too?

There are usually social events throughout the year, whether it be charity ball events run by societies, events at The Eagle and Ball student pub, or things on during the day you can get involved in while you're on campus. The is usually another Give It A Go week in January, where societies offer free sessions so you can try them out for free before you sign up. And there is usually lots of nightlife going on as people come back to uni from the Christmas break and New Year. So I think in terms of socializing, you'll have lots of opportunities. 🙂

Try your best to stay calm at the moment. I'll get back to you about your original question when I can.

Hi there,

I've had a response for you.

The university unfortunately can't guarantee that places would become available and that they would be offered to January intake students as it would be a faculty/tutor decision. It really does differ each year, but from what I've found out, there is no guarantee of being able to change.

By best advice therefore would be to prepare for a January start as best as you can. And following on from my previous replies, I think you will still have a fab time at uni regardless of your start date.

Feel free to ask any more questions. 🙂

Child Nursing! Yeah it’s weird with accom but they said they sent it to me at the wrong time so I think people like us that start in Jan get the email later? And she said to just leave the email and not do anything lmaoo. But all in all since we aren’t alone I think we’ll be fine since there is a whole batch of students like us
