Chromebook or laptop

I’ve never been too tech savvy, Will a Chromebook do the job for undergraduate course or do I need a laptop
Hey @Donabrennan

I have chromebook and it's great for uni. It's more lightweight than a laptop and it was so much cheaper. I haven't come across anything where I would need a laptop rather than my Chromebook and if I did there are lots of computers around campus to use

Hope that helps!

What's your undergrad course in? It will be fine for an English Lit degree, but not for CompSci for example.

Price is also another major factor. What's your budget?

Why get a Chromebook when you can get really nice used premium business laptop for £150 to £250 from ebay?
On which you then run either Windows 10 or 11 Pro. Or even better, Linux, eg Debian with KDE Plasma.

Best size of laptop will depend on your mobility profile. What sort of physical build you are. And whether you will be carry the laptop on foot or public transport a lot. Best size laptop for you could be anywhere from 13.3" to 17".

Honestly, If the only things you use your laptop for are, office 365 apps (word etc), netflix, and web browsing then perhaps a chromebook will do.

I can’t recommend anything such as second hand buying to you, as it’s just a bit of a hassle and can be risky for someone that’s not well informed.

If you know you need to run anything remotely intensive on a laptop or in your course, then stay away from a chromebook. If you’re doing any sort of creative or computing heavy course, again stay away from chromebook.

It’s generally a no from me, and If you turn around and need a more competent and powerful laptop one year later - that’s literally £200 or so down the drain on the chromebook.

Figure out ur use cases, and it’s potentially viable, though it gives u very little wiggle room in the future for anything past ver light work.
