is there any estimate of when freshers will receive their timetables? i’m currently working part time and they’re pestering me about my uni timetable to decide on shifts :/

Hi,

I believe freshers should get their timetable a couple of weeks before term starts. You could email your department to ask if they could give you your timetable earlier, or a rough idea of a timetable, and explain why you need this. There are no guarantees they will give you this information but it’s worth a try!

Hi
I have a part time job off campus and my shift is quite early on the weekends, I don’t think public transport would get me there on time without having to get a bus very early, and I’m not even sure if there would be buses that early. I have a car and I was wondering if i would be able to get a parking permit and if so how would I go about getting one? Thank you
I received my timetable today and realised that i'm in every single day (Film and English Literature joint honours), I was wondering if anyone had any advice on handling this amount of work and also balancing social life and a job.

Hi,

As I have not needed to look at a parking permit I can't say for certain whether you would be able to get one but I can provide information and point you in the right direction of people that can help you!

Here is the website link for student parking: Student Parking - Lancaster University
Here is the link for parking policy and enforcement: Policy and Enforcement - Lancaster University
Here is the link for the student parking policy: StudentParkingPolicy2024-25.pdf (lancaster.ac.uk)

I have looked through the student parking policy and picked out information I think may be helpful for you.

The policy states: "Places of employment within the urban core area can normally ‘reasonably be reached by public transport’, unless work starts before 08:30 (09:45 on Sundays) or finishes after 23:30." - if your working hours are between the hours of 8:30am and 11:30pm then you should be able to use public transport. If you did want to look at this Lancaster buses are operated by Stagecoach. Student bus passes are available to buy too. If you look on the Stagecoach website you can plan a route and check times and routes to see whether buses would be an option for you.

There is a section which you may fall under due to your work commitments which would allow you to qualify and get a permit - there may be others too but as I don't know your personal circumstances I couldn't say.

Category 5a. is as follows: "5a.Campus residents with regular term-time employment in excess of 10 hours per week who cannot reasonably reach their employment by public transport. Students working on Campus will not be eligible for a parking permit. Employment by an immediate family member (parent/legal guardian, grandparent, spouse, brother or sister) cannot be included.".

If you fall under this category, you will need to contact Car Parking Office, Security Lodge on 01524 521877 or by emailing [email protected] with evidence - letter on headed paper from employer confirming hours of work and that work is during term-time and 1 x monthly or 2 x weekly current payslips (with times of work if night work). Please note that random sampling of employment applications with employers will be conducted to ensure fairness of process and places of work must be less than 75 miles from campus.

The parking permit you would be able to get will be for the South West Campus Parking Zone (Alex Park) priced at £165.12 p.a.

Hope this helps, Ella - Lancaster University Student Ambassador

Hi @sofiaciccotta
I would recommend making a weekly schedule to manage your time. I would start by including any timetabled lectures, seminars ect. and then schedule in some time to do the independent study required for each of these eg. reading after the lecture and time to work on your coursework. Personally, i find concentrating on university work between 9-5 means the evenings and weekends are free to either socialize at a society or work.
It might be worth exploring job options on the university website as they have a range of jobs you can work on campus, which tend to be quite flexible, as they understand student workloads Vacancy Search Results - Lancaster University’s Employment and Recruitment Service (lancaster-university.co.uk).
Hope this helps!

Is there any way to find my flatmates before I move in? I'm in Cartmel college and know my house number but there doesn't seem to be a way to find those i'll be living with ahead of time.

Hi @sofiaciccotta

There isn’t any official way to find out who your flatmates will be before you move in.
When I was joining I was on a college group chat on Facebook. My flatmates and I realised that we would be in the same flat as we were all assigned the same house number and we had all signed up to be a show flat. You will find out your flat number when you move in.
