It’s not irrational to not want to go to university. If you really feel like you’re not ready you are more than free to pull out and reapply next year. There’s nothing wrong with taking GAP years to try and find out what you want to do and what will work best for your mental health.

But don’t go to university immediately just because you feel obligated to, you’re setting yourself up for a negative experience! Think it over and decide if you want to go this year or next year and remember there’s nothing wrong with deferring for a year

Hope this helps,

Hi there,

Sorry you're feeling like this. I definitely think you're not alone in these feelings - plenty of people will be feeling the same as you. When I got my results, I was terrified of going to uni, and also felt like I didn't want to move away from home. I ended up deferring my offer and taking a gap year, and I found that this gave me the confidence I needed to go to university the following year! I also felt that by that point I was able to push myself to move further away from home rather than staying where I was.

If it's an option for you, deferring your offer and taking a gap year could help you to gain the confidence to go to university. Or, you could try and push yourself to go this year - you might find it's not as scary as it feels right now! Try and remember the reasons you decided to choose this university in the first place, and focus on them.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!

Hey there!
Feeling nervous and having cold feet is completely normal. Going to uni is a big step for everyone, do you have someone you can talk to about how you're feeling? It's really good that you've reached out with this post, as many others are probably feeling the same nervousness as you. Try to remember why you applied to begin with and the feelings you felt when planning your course. But remember you've got this!
Good luck 🙂 - Stacey

Hiya, that's a real shame that you are feeling that way but it is also completely normal! Going to university can feel like a big change and to be honest it is a big change especially if you are moving far way from home! It is a lot to process and a lot to take in and can initially feel incredibly overwhelming.

I think it's worth weighing up if this is just a feeling or if you actually do want to withdraw your application. If you really do want to do that, that is completely fine and there are plenty of options for reapplying in the future or applying somewhere different. Just because you made a decision doesn't mean you are bound to it forever and there are people who can help make sure you get the support you need to change or withdraw. However if this is just a feeling and you are still set on going to that University in September, then it is important to not let it control you. As I said, it is very normal to feel that way and everyone at some point or the other felt like that in the build up to uni. I felt it after I initially applied whether or not it was the right decision. Ultimately though, it was a decision I haven't regretted once! I have loved my time at University so far and there are groups, and people at every university who are there to help with that transition to University life and to help you ease in and deal with issues you may face like homesickness. As I said it's a big change and nobody expects it to be completely smooth sailing but once you get past the initial worries, it isn't as scary or daunting as you may think. Everyone is in the same boat as you.

I hope this helps but ultimately pick the decision that is best for you. There is no wrong answer.

All the best,

Hi there!

University can be a big change so don't rush into it if you are not ready. Think about what is best for you both academically but mentally too. There is nothing wrong with waiting another year, taking a gap year and then being prepared to reapply for university. I did a foundation course at my college as I didn't feel ready to go to uni straight away so if a gap year isn't for you there are other options too.

You are definitely not alone and many people are feeling like this. I am sure you will make the right decision for yourself 🙂

Hope this helps

Hey there Anon,

Some great advice here already - perhaps I could offer my perspective?

Like others have said, these feelings are completely normal and you're absolutely not alone in this. The most important thing is that you put yourself first. If going to uni is causing you very serious stress-anxiety, then definitely talk it through with someone you trust to try and sort it out together. However, it sounds like you've been really successful in your education so far - you've got into a very competitive course, passed an interview and a lengthy application process and are clearly a really hard worker and perfectly capable of going to uni this year. You may well be stronger than you think 🙂

I would say see how you feel in the next couple of weeks. As has been said you can call up your uni and ask about a deferral or reapply next year if you are certain, but I would keep in mind that going to uni is not as scary as it seems beforehand and you might find moving away for a bit refreshing and liberating! I would say you've worked really hard to get here so you deserve to give yourself a chance at this if you feel able to.

You know yourself better than anyone - have that talk, see how it goes, and you will make the best decision for you.

Hope this helps, best of luck whichever next steps you decide to take
