In campus or private Loughborough accomodation?

Hey, I applied for accommodation with my 5 choices for Loughborough, however the room they offered me was a catered standard room (which is the opposite of what I want (ensuite, self catered)). I wanted to be in halls so socialisation is easier and being in campus would feel safer. But I also don't wanna be in a room that I don't like since I definitely don't want a shared bathroom and want to cook my own food😭.

I was looking at some private accommodation and the rooms are really modern and prices are very similar to uni's halls. Only problem is it is not in uni and I might be a bit isolated from the uni.

I'm not sure what exactly I should do but I think I'm leaning more towards private. I can try to contact university for more room options too but since I'll be a first year I'm a bit lost and would love to hear some advice 🙂

Hi @Beri!,

I think both options are good and no matter what you choose you will have a great time!

A lot of students (at all universities) don't always get their first choice accommodation but surprise themselves by how much they end up enjoying it. Catered accommodation is very sociable and saves you having to walk to town and shop and cook! Private accommodations you can still affiliate to a hall on campus so you can still do fresher activities and be part of that hall throughout the year.

I am sure you will enjoy either and meet some great people 🙂

I would recommend either emailing or calling the student accommodation centre to see if they can give you any advice.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please do ask.

I’m in a similar situation - I ended up applying late and all the self catered, en-suite options were gone so I’m pretty sad. I was also considering private accommodation but sort of worried about pricing and also being completely by myself.

My only main concern was wanting a quiet room which thankfully there was some left but I’m really stressed about having to share a bathroom and would also hate having to share a large area with like 7-8 people, I wanted to go for a 3-4 people room as I’m a hijabi so I was wondering if I could put in a request to have an area with just females but I emailed previously and got an indirect answer. Do you know if there’s any way I could put in requests? I’m not sure how to.

I’m mainly just mad at myself for applying to it late.

Omg I thought the same way! I applied for a quite room too but didn't get it. I'm not a hijabi but I'm still a Muslim so I wanted to have the bathroom to myself and a quite room so I can sleep in peace lol. Also while I can handle the kitchen you never know who you'll be sharing the bathroom with and if it happens to be someone that has no cleaning skills or hygiene understanding I think I'd go crazy 😭.While applying they also asked for sex preference and I said single sex but I don't see that being mentioned at the room offer they gave me. ☹️

I looked at some private accommodations and they have studio and ensuite options and seem to target students from the university anyways so I think you'll stills be surrounded by students! I looked at Luxurio and Study Inn which was mentioned in Loughborough uni's website too (in the link they sent me on the message above).

You can contact the uni or wait for the email reply! I emailed [email protected] and they returned to me within few hours about a different issue. But if it doesn't work you can call them too. I hope everything works out well for you!

Also when I was applying for accom the website crashed and I had to call them for them to send me a link! The lady on the phone was so nice but I lost like atleast 20mins in the process and there were no good options left 🥲

That’s crazy I didn’t think I’d even see another Muslim girl!!😭😭yeah that’s my exact concern the reviews for the accommodation I got point out hygiene as a flaw too which isn’t the best. I was looking at private accommodations and did see luxurio! They’re also round about a 20 minute walk away from the arts building where my course will be which isn’t bad as I don’t mind walking so I might just take a leap of faith lol

Thank you so much for the replyy

Ikrrr and you're doing and art /design degree too!??girl same!!😭😭 I'll be doing graphic design! 😀 I think the uni is very white british populated so not much diversity lol. also same that walk might help me stay active a bit💀. I'm glad the art building is a bit outside of the uni so if I go to a private hall the distance wont be that bad.

Also I just got a call from the university and they asked If I had any questions etc. Apparently they keep some of the rooms for the clearing students that'll be applying later on and said maybe I could call the accommodation thingy to see if they have any rooms available as they help much more when you call them. This wasn't supposed to be this stressful 😭😭. I can't even call them rn because they're only open till 4pm and weekdays only so I guess I'll have to wait till Monday! I'm still gonna research private halls since it makes the most sense rn

Stop I’m also doing graphics design!😭😭 and yeah I agree but on the open day I had gone to I did see other Muslims which made me hopeful haha - I was planning on joining the Islamic society group chat before even starting to see if I could find anyone else - you can find their instagram and give them ur details if ur interested!
I’ve been looking at private and I’m about to call to ask about same sex areas and how many people are in one space as I literally can’t find it anywhere - I can come back and let u know what I find if u want!! I’m looking at the luxurio rooms 🙂

I'm also not sure as to whether I can even look into private rooms as I've already booked an onsite one. I was hoping to call them but forgot they closed at 4 so guess i'll have to wait to. but iA this all works out!

Omg whattt😭😭 if you don't mind can I get your insta account so we can keep in touch lol? Also I didn't know the society had a group chat! I'll message them to see what happens.

Yea I'm not sure about the private ones having same sex flats so calling is the best option! Good thing is that atleast for Luxurio the rooms seem spacious compared to the rooms of the uni so it won't be that claustrophobic lol.

oh and good shout about the rooms, the living spaces seemed a lot nicer than the ones oncampus to be honest and so did the bathrooms!
Guys it's really nice you're meeting, but please - for your own safety - don't share instas and stuff on a public forum.

Hey, Im going to lough in sept too! But if it's really not what u wanted - then maybe private accommodation. I heard that you can almost accociate yourself with a hall too! So say there's a halls event you can join a hall. ...... My honest advice id go for is maybe test it and change later?? but yeah for me an ensuite was a non negotiable. Wishing you the best! YES PLEASE!! I can’t believe I’ve already met another Muslim girl you have no idea how happy I am 😭😭 - my instas @muqaddasss05 , I’ll send you the society from there if you’d like and in their post they talked about it!
Also I emailed uniacco and they referred me to a booking specialist and they said that female apartments are available and you’d be sharing a kitchen with 5-6 people which is great. I'm not sure whether that's specific to the Luxurio apartment but I said I was looking at the classic en-suite and that's what they said. I’ve emailed the university too to ask whether it’s possible to opt out of on campus accommodation in case they say you can’t go private now but might not get a reply till Monday, I’m just worried they’ll say no and then I’ll get stuck in an area that’s a male majority.
Just sent the request 🤭! Also I think I found their insta and I sent them a DM so we'll see when they add me to the GC lol.

I'll send them a similar email too then because if there are ensuites available and specifically at gendered flats that'll be great! And I don't think they'll not let you get a private accom because the lady on the phone today told me that's absolutely fine and the prices are usually similar to unis ones anyways 💀.

Hi! I just had a call from uni and they said the exact same thing! So I'm glad that's possible and I can still attend those type of specific house events 🙂. And I definitely agree lol i cannot do standard! Like you said worse case I might contact the uni to see if they have any rooms available if I regret private.

Oh that’s perfect lol - and I added u!! I’ll most likely go towards private then tbh because I got a room in towers and I feel like I’m going to be put with a lot of people and I can be socially awkward sometimes 😭😭

Thats so real I'm prob gonna wear my earphones in the kitchen because I cannot stand the awkwardness while I try to cook😭😭. Also I heard from somewhere that towers got a rat problem or something and that might make you wanna go private even more 😀
