Picking between biomedical sciences degrees from uni of Lancaster or uni of surrey

I've got offers from both the uni of Surrey and Lancaster for the same course. Both offer a year abroad for the third year but only Surrey offers a year for placement in the industry. I'm very unsure about what to pick but Lancaster is generally ranked higher for biomedical science. I also live pretty far from Lancaster and closer to Surrey. I'm wondering if the fact that there is a placement for industry with surrey makes it the better option. it's also closer to London but I've heard the accommodation for Lancaster is nicer. If anyone has any advice that could help me pick it would be much appreciated.

First congratulations on your offers for biomedical science. It seems like an exciting time being offered by two great universities, but from your point of view I understand it can also be a struggle picking between two universities when considering many factors involved.

Whilst I cannot speak personally for Surrey, I’ll share some advice and thoughts as a Lancaster Student. It is true that we are ranked higher and offer year abroad like Surrey. However, you will still have as many opportunities as you would in Surrey University as we are number one in the UK for graduate prospects in Biomedical. Lancaster University always aims to offer relevant opportunities and help to students during their time here so they can gain first hand experiences in the field they want to work in. However whilst I am not a biomedicine student, I would suggest reaching out to the faculty to discuss any further questions you may have about biomedicine : [email protected]

In terms of location and accommodation, I myself also faced the same choice of choosing Lancaster vs Surrey both of which were far from my home, but I chose Lancaster also due to the modern campus life, league tables and accommodation. I had a positive experience living in the university managed accommodation when i lived in shared accomodation, any complaints or faults we had, was quickly dealt with. Since I also lived far from home, they also offered me a lot of support tailored specifically to those who may be dealing with home sickness. It really is a supportive community which easied many of my worries when i first joined Lancaster.

Lancaster University guarantees accommodation to first year students. Here is a link if you want to find out more about our accommodation: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/accommodation/#:~:text=To%20reduce%20the%20stress%20of,your%20first%20year%20of%20study.

Ultimately the choice is yours to make, both are great universities and it’s good to take into consideration different factors and choose the university you think will be best for you. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Hope this helps.

Best of Luck!
