West Mains Road Accomodation

I've just received my accomodation offer to stay at West Mains Road. It wasn't one of my 5 preferred choices and im slightly worried about the location since it is a lot further away from everything compared to my other options, (I'll be studying at George Square). I've looked online but havent found anyone talking about it. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it and if they could share any details.

Hey! I have just got mine aswell for West Mains Road, again it wasn't one of my 5 choices but I have had a look and bus links look quite frequent and there is a main supermarket only 10 minutes away so doesn't look too bad (for reference I'lll also be in the main campus).

I’m in flat 1. I think I selected a preference for mixed but I’m not sure.

Hi, it's not a bad flat overall. You'll be sharing with 9 others with 3 bathrooms between you all so there isn't really any competition. The shared kitchen area in my flat got really messy but you will expect that from a large flat. When I was there 64 West Mains was mixed and 65 (where I stayed) was all single sex. The rooms are fairly decent, if you want me to go in more details and give you some general advice send me a PM

I'm in West mains too, same situation, flat 6. Is the bike infrastructure good? Is there more information about this place I've randomly been assigned? 😨😨

Flat 6 was my old flat last year, it's at the top so if your facing the front you get a lovely view of Arthur's seat. There is secure bike storage which you can get access to via the keycode in the main common room. It takes about 10 minutes to cycle into town and there is a cycle path through the meadows and up Marchmont or you can just take the main road. There is a shuttle bus at the King's Buildings right outside West Mains which is free with a student card and gets you in to town in about 10 minutes. Alternatively, there is the number 9 bus (which is also free if you get a young scot card) and that takes about 15 minutes and goes the less direct route. Both run every 20 minutes except the shuttle which doesn't run on the weekend. Anything else you want to know?
TBH, it wasn't the worst accommodation out of the lot, just a bit out of the way. I have lectures on the central campus and used the shuttle virtually everyday and it wasn't that big of a deal.

I've also been assigned West mains even though it wasn't in my preferences (flat 4 btw), but it's actually convenient because I'm doing Physics and it's on the same campus. It looks quite nice, but the only thing that worries me is sharing a kitchen with 9 other people. Should definitely be interesting!

I don’t know what to do. Yesterday was bittersweet. Worked so hard to get to Edinburgh and now I’ve been assigned this place which looks fantastic if you’re a scientist on that campus. But I’m not. I do not understand why they have put me here when all my five choices were close to the centre. I feel so let down. It’s not cheap either!

Speaking from experience, it's really not that bad. Yes you are on the wrong campus but it doesn't stop you using the facilities such as the library. West Mains is also only a 10 minute walk away from the Cameron Toll shopping centre where you get a full sized Sainsbury's and Aldi (you only get the local versions in town). I completely agree it's not cheap but sadly the University has doubled the cost of it's managed accommodation since 2019 and it's not an issue unique to West Mains. Clearly you will miss out on the 'living in town' experience as you have to get a bus in but it's the same with a lot of accommodations and will almost certainly be your situation next year when you go privately rented. I suppose some of the convenience is lost being at West Mains but as I said earlier the buses are very frequent. I hope that helps relieve some of your stresses about it.
