Uni advice needed asap

I recently received a place at Aston university for psychology and business and on results day I went into clearing because I also in the moment considered a place at university of Birmingham for psychology however now I need to decide which uni to go to but I'm rlly stuck and have to make a decision quickly so
If anyone could give me advice on which uni is better that would be appreciated
Have you visited either university?

What would you say are the pros and cons of each university and course?

No I haven't which doesn't benefit me but with Aston the location is better for me and it's diverse in terms of students and they have a good business school hence why I picked psychology and business but with UOB they are a Russel group and the campus looks beautiful. But my questions are is a joint honours better than a single one and with a Russel group uni wouldn't that make me more employable ?

Aston’s placement year is likely to boost your employability more than Birmingham’s “prestige”

Was Aston your firm choice? If so how come you didn’t visit?

No I didn't visit either due to being busy in exams and stressing about them and Birmingham I believe also has a placement year but I'm struggling which to pick

if both have a placement, uob is a no brainer for me. I’ve been to both campuses extensively - do a lot of sports at both sports centres  uob in terms of campus and general facilities and societies is just much better than astons. uob’s course and general uni ranking is far better too.

If you have more specific questions regarding aston or uob that aren’t course related, rather location, campus, societies, facilities etc i’d be happy to help!

I only just saw that astons was psychology and business whereas uob just psychology. How much does business matter to you here? if you purely picked it because aston is a good business school, uob looks like it’s ranked top 10 for psychology - better you check yourself more extensively.

If you really want to take psychology joint with business than JUST psychology, i think you have your answer, otherwise i really do think it’s uob all the way.

Not all placements are equal. Aston have been offering placements on pretty much all courses for decades. They have established support to help students find worthwhile placements.

Birmingham doesn’t have that background or reputation for good placement support. I’d want to speak to some final year students who have just completed a placement at Birmingham to be reassured that it’s a genuinely worthwhile experience on their course
Do both courses carry psychology accreditation? This might affect how you use the pyschology in the future; it could limit your options

Is there a lot of support available at UOB and does it seem better than astons ?

Hi there!

I'm Kiera, a student ambassador at York St. John University, and I'm going into my third year of psychology so can give you some advice based on my experience.

Choosing a university is incredibly daunting. My advice would be to make an essentials list of what you want from a university. Consider how far away from home you want to be, what sort of campus you'd like (city/campus university), what teaching style and assessment styles work best for you (as this is different at every university!), and anything else that is important to you. Once you know what you want, it becomes much easier to narrow down your search, you can apply filters on the UCAS clearing page to match your ideal entry requirements and travel time from home. Something I would stress is make sure the city you are looking at is somewhere you can feel at home and safe - outside of university time you live in that city and will spend a lot of your time there - so make sure you'll be happy there😊

Also, with psychology, your course needs to be BPS (British Psychological Society) accredited. This is so that your course meets the minimum requirements for you to then go on and practise psychology. Link: BPS Accreditation. If a course is accredited, it will mention this on the university's page for the course.

For example, one of the reasons I chose YSJ is because I wanted to combine both elements of neuropsychology and developmental psychology in my degree - for my third year I got to choose all of my modules, and I'll be studying language development, adolescent development, lifespan development, and neuropsychology. An essential for me was being assessed by both exams and coursework rather than either/or, which I get on my course!

I've checked with admissions and we do have clearing places available for Psychology, Psychology with Counselling, Psychology with Child Development, and Forensic Psychology, if you are interested. Link: YSJ Clearing. Our clearing hotline is open today until 5pm.

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask me any other questions you might have, about YSJ or psychology in general.😊
-Kiera (Student Ambassador)
