Southampton Accommodation

I’ve recently been offered a quiet standard en-suite in Glen Eyre, and before I go mad buying everything I think I’ll need, what are the essentials I should bring with me day one? Will I need to buy pots and pans, cutlery, plates, bowls, etc.?

Also, what kind of internet speeds can I expect? Is it symmetric? Can I connect using an ethernet cable?

How much desk space is there typically?
Hi there! 😄

Welcome to Southampton, it'll be great to have you here in September!

Based on what you've said, I am assuming you are self-catered and therefore will be cooking all your own meals. This means that you will need all the items you might need for cooking and eating; pots and pans, cooking trays, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery, etc. I would hold off on getting a kettle or a toaster, unless you specifically want one for your room, because while they don't come with the flat, sometimes previous tenants will have left theirs or your flatmates as a group might decide to all pitch in to get them.

On top of this, you will need all the things for your room; bedding, bedside lamp, decorations, etc. I would also wait before bringing a bin because rooms will usually include a bin. You might also want to have a mattress topper if you need a specific type of surface to sleep on, but I found that I didn't need one. For your bathroom, you should bring a bathmat, towels, and cleaning products. You might find it useful to bring a small bathroom bin but it's not necessary if you are just going to use the bedroom bin.

The internet at halls is standard eduroam that you would get on campus and I found that it was perfectly fine for streaming films and shows, downloading documents, and scrolling through social media. You can use an ethernet cable, the port for my room was right next to the desk but I know some people's was closer to their bed. The desk space is usually quite good. It's the largest I've had in any accommodation in the past few years, and it was especially deep which was useful for multiple screens and storing things at the back of my desk.

If you have any more questions, let me know!

Thanks for the reply! I have the catered package, but it only comes with two meals a day. I’m wondering whether I still need to bring cooking utensils for lunch/ dinner? Going off of your answer, I probably will.
