Building Surveying UoR

Hi everyone,
Set to set building surveying in Reading university from October this year.

I just wanted to ask current students who do this course whether a MacBook or iPad is better? And what’s the best way to take notes in the course? Should I bother buying notepads or shall I stick to electrical? I already have an iPad but I’m thinking of upgrading it to a better and new one since I’ve had that one for around three years. Or my other option is considering a MacBook. I’m not sure and don’t wanna waste my money on something I won’t need.

All recommendations are welcome.

Good afternoon @bksehra,

In terms of notetaking, you will find most students use laptops for their notes as this is an ideal way to store your documents without having to carry them around campus. An ipad or laptop both works well for this.

Many students find it helpful to have both handwritten and online notes. But this is down to preference. I recommend trying both methods of note taking when you arrive at university and assess which you find more convenient.

During freshers week you will find lots of careers and socityes files will give you free stationary. This might be an option to think about, rather than buying lots before you arrive at university, alternatively the library cafe has an on site stationary store, where you can buy the essentials if you need to.

In conclusion, if you feel comfortable taking notes on your ipad, I would personally say this will be okay for you to us, but maybe consider getting a pen for the ipad, as this will make it easier to write. Similarly, if you do not find using the ipad okay to take notes, then the Mac book might be a better idea.

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please let us know.
All the best
