Student finance - full time to part time, 2 years funding used no qualification

This is a lengthy read but I appreciate anyone taking the time to read and let me know if it sounds familiar or if anyone from SFE can advise on the situation

So I enrolled onto a full time BA course at Salford Uni in 2017, I didn’t end up officially withdrawing from the course until 2019 as my second year was actually a resit of my first year, both years I didn’t submit any work, my mental health was at absolute rock bottom and I tried multiple times to make it work and restart fresh but there was nothing that could have helped me at that time - I was in a bad relationship and isolating myself, overall a very dark period and 2 years of funding wasted.

Fast forward to 2023, I am in a better position mentally and decide I want to try again at university. So I apply for student finance, again for a full time 3 year Ba course. Student finance write back and tell me I will only get 2 years of funding, year one will be unfunded but I can appeal and ask for an extra year due to personal circumstances in my previous course. I obtain a letter from my previous uni confirming the circumstances, a doctors note to confirm my struggle with mental health over many years, but SFE reject my letter because doctors couldn’t date it back to 2019 (I didn’t seek GP help or start medication until 2021) but I was seeking counsel at the university for some time and they were fully aware. Anyway, after so many hurdles with SFE I found a different course - part time foundation degree 3 years (similar subject) and I was going to fund the first year myself with my maintenance loan as it was much cheaper but the new uni failed to update my course at enrolment and released the maintenance loan I was entitled to for the Ba course, meaning I received an overpayment when I inevitably had to withdraw from the course after later learning that I was not actually entitled to any tuition loans in any years of study as it isn’t a FdA in dentistry. I was fed so much wrong information from both SFE and the university regarding what funding I would be entitled to - once I highlighted this to the course tutors they took me to the admin team and I was present to a conversation between admin at the uni and a specific office line in SFE (apparently only institutions have access to this line) and they confirmed I would be able to get funding for part time for up to 16 years, as long as I hadn’t obtained a qualification in previous study. The uni woman didn’t mention that the course I was studying is a foundation degree and I already know there isn’t tuition loans for this subject. Through absolute frustration I just scrapped the whole thing and decided to withdraw because it was an unbelievable amount of stress.

Almost a year has passed, and I am still itching to get back into uni and do something I love. I have applied for a part time BA hons 6 year course at Bolton uni - as I know Ba part time is eligible for tuition fee support - but does this still apply to me as somebody who has had 2 years funding at full time level but came out with no results whatsoever? Or am I just going to be given more disappointing news that I can’t get any help again. My SFE application has been processing for quite a while I’m expecting an update by 30th august but i have a feeling they’re scratching their heads trying to figure out if I am eligible for support at all

Thanks in advance if anyone reads and responds

Hi there,

Part time courses are exempt from previous study rules if you don't hold a qualification. So unlike full time applications, we wouldn't base this on your previous study. Thanks, Jason
