How have you found having different holidays to the rest of the uni? Do you meet many people on other courses?

There’s lots of things I liked about having different holidays. It’s really fun to be at university during summer! Especially because the Sutton Bonington camp has lots of nature and stuff! It’s also easier to get competitive placements. The downside is that it is quiet so there’s less events and the events that do run are smaller because there are less students.

There’s definitely opportunity to meet people on different courses. Some of my friends are doing animal science and I know people who have friends on main campus. To do this you probably need to join societies that run in both April and September so you can meet people during the overlap but it’s definitely possible. For most of the year it will jsut be April vets!

Than you 😃. I'm thinking of bringing my horse to Uni, do you know anyone who has? And if its a good idea, especially with term dates, EMS etc.

I know multiple people who bring their horse to uni. In first year you can have it on campus if there is space and there's plenty of places in the area for other years or if the stables are full. if housing on campus i believe they may be used as teaching horses for palpation but i do not know if this is compulsory or not but i do believe it decreases the cost (again not sure). Different term dates shouldn't impact things much. With EMS that is entirely up to you. If you get 12 months a year accommodation then you can get EMS in the area. Alternatively you can bring your horse home for the big holiday but that will depend on your circumstances

I dont have a horse myself so I dont have all of the information!

Thanks so much for all the info! How did you find freshers week, with it just being the april cohort?

im not the best person to ask because i started in 2021 so we did not have a freshers due to covid rules. I know lots of events are run for april but it is smaller. If you feel like it wasn't what you wanted from freshers, you can join in on september freshers!

Just curious how you're finding it and what your favourite year was?
Also any advice about managing finances?

First and third year were my favourites. First year because it’s freshers and everything’s new. Third year because you are in charge of your own time a lot more and have more free time so you have more of a work life balance. Fourth year is the busiest as the hardest (by far) but also the most interesting.

Finance wise I think it varies for everyone. Some people use budgets but that just doesn’t work for me so I divide my loan by how many weeks it needs to last for and only have enough for a week in my bank I have a card for and everything else in my savings. If you are worried about money, work in the holidays. I did a lot of animal work (dog walking and yard work) which paid well (£12 an hour) and it’s flexible.

Strongly depends on where you go. We have a lot of really nice places which do tend to be more expensive but you also have a lot of cheaper places where drinks are like £5. An average place is probably £7-8 for a cocktail and the nicer/more fun places (like the alchemist, penny lane, the lost caves etc) is £10-15.
