About Swansea - Affordability, Jobs, Freshers Week

I’m from England so I don’t know much about Wales or Swansea. How affordable is swansea food and transportation wise? What places should i apply to for jobs? Do you encourage buying a mytravelpass? Is buying a freshers wristband recommended? And what is freshers week like?
Hi there,

I highly encourage for you to apply for the mytravelpass, if you are aged between 16 to 21 years old, as it is a free scheme set up by the Welsh government that can save you up to 1/3 on travel. Here is a link to more information and the application process: Home mytravelpass | Welsh Government

This is some further information on Swansea public transport: Public Transport - Swansea University.

In regards to food affordability in Swansea, there are a lot of options for food shopping including places like Aldi and Lidl that are very affordable for students and the city is more affordable compared to bigger cities like Cardiff, Bristol and London.

A great place to look for part-time jobs is through sites like Indeed. We also have the Employability Hub at Swansea University that can offer support when looking for part-time jobs, internships, placement opportunities and graduate roles.

If you are joining us at Swansea University, we have our own Freshers wristband through our Student Union who host a whole bunch of events from our Freshers Fayre where you can meet all our clubs and societies to club nights and our new addition of Wavey Bingo. This is a great opportunity for new students to kick-off their university experience by having fun and meeting friends. However, this is not a necessity and there will be a host of other opportunities and events for you during your time at university. This link has all the information on what Freshers is like here at Swansea and how you can purchase a pass if you are interested: Freshers 2024 - Swansea University Students' Union (swansea-union.co.uk)

A word of warning is that there are many different wristbands that try to get sold to new students that are not associated with our university and the above link is the only one we offer and recommend for freshers.

I hope this information helps and if you have any further enquires please do not hesitate to message.

Best wishes,
Alexis - Swansea University Business Management Student Ambassador
