Metal works Bristol- faqs!!

I’ll start this by saying I am 100% of the following information.
If you have been offered metal works at Bristol you need to know this.
Yes-you can’t move in until the 14th of September which is after official welcome week. No-they cannot change this. You will miss the official welcome week. But they are laying on loads of events for this accommodation solely. It will be brilliant.
If it is out of your price range, you can request a transfer in the beginning of October, you’re in a position where you have secured a great room and so there will be plenty of people eager to swap. Don’t panic. They will refund you price differences.
The walk into Bristol city centre is not 40 minutes despite what Google maps might tell you, there are loads of shortcuts.
Bedminster is lovely. It’s a great suburb with everything you need. Bedminster is easier to access than the north village.

The email saying you need to accept the offer today was sent in error, you have until tomorrow at midnight. This is fact. I would suggest you accept and then you are at least certain to have somewhere to live. If you don’t,there isn’t another offer coming your way.
To be sure, you are not getting a second offer, doesn’t matter what you say. Bristol is full to the brim. There is nothing left. Doesn’t matter if you cry or scream at the accommodation peeps, they can’t do anything more.
Hope this helps!

I’m not sure who you are as you are anonymous but there’s no point lying to students. Saying there ‘will be plenty of people eager to swap’ is a lie. Most people do not want to move halls once they are in, particularly after welcome week when many will be friendly with their flatmates not to mention metal works is expensive and out of a lot of people’s budgets.

In terms of uni transport; unless the uni is offering a bus service paid for like U1 from north village it is not easier to access and students will probably need to fork out on bus fares.

The walk will very much depend where lectures are being held, it’s not a lot shorter than half an hour to walk to the wills building and that’s if you are a quick walker, if you are doing sciences you will be looking at 40 mins. You are also not close to most of the bus routes eg 3,4 to get to coombe or if you are a vet student U2 to Langford.

It’s close to Asda which is defo a bonus but people do need to be aware of where they are going to be living. I was in a brand new halls this year just gone and it defo had its advantages.

Halls socials don’t really match the club nights of freshers as well as certain subjects doing their own freshers events (the vet school last year did a whole day thing) so o would still recommend people who are in metal works maybe look at an air bnb for welcome week with others in their halls so they don’t miss out!

I’m sure this is kindly meant but if you would like to join clubs eg audition for orchestra as well as meet people and just feel you are familiar with the place, get adjusted to leaving home etc before the term starts/ for many of us first time solo away from home then it is an issue
They could have put just final year students etc there or mature students the first year

Important question - the website seems to say there are mandatory sessions in faculty in Welcome Week. Is this true because if I can't find somewhere affordable to stay, then i will need to work out how to apologise and then catch up (which is a terrible start to uni)

This will really depend on the faculty, and unfortunately you won’t know until the uni releases the timetable the week before. Most it isn’t really ‘compulsory’ eg they won’t check your attendance.

I do vet med and we did have a few welcome lectures and an entire day thing at the vet school but again none of these were really compulsory just very helpful.

The other thing that happens in welcome week (and goes into week 1) is registering and getting your Ucard which is needed to enter certain buildings. A few of my friends couldn’t get a slot until week 1 and it made it harder to get around as you would have to wait for someone else to open doors for you and certain buildings are properly secure so you have gates to tap into so if you don’t have a card you have to speak to security to let you in (biochem building as an example of this).

It’s not like school where lecturers will know if people aren’t there personally. We do have an attendance app but likely welcome week will be just getting people used to it so won’t automatically assume you aren’t there if attendance isn’t logged x

thanks - but this does emphasise my concern about it not being all about making friends (which is important) but actually there are practical and educational disadvantages too... :frown:

What are your actual move in days? I know when I lived into halls last year you could move in the day before our contract actually started (so Friday) which could be of some benefit to you guys as the freshers fair is on Friday normally of welcome week. If you do miss anything of importance you won’t be punished or blamed for it as it’s down to the uni themselves x

They will repeat all of those things on the week you move in

This isn't true at all BRISTOL IS NOT FULL TO THE BRIM!!! There is empty accommodation all over the town with HUGE offers on! Kings Square Studios and St Lawrence House both bang in the city centre have £1000 cashbacks available!!! Loads of beds everywhere in the town, this is just the uni scaremongering to get people in their own accommodation!!!

Do you know if metal works would be suitable choice of accommodation for veterinary science based at Langford campus?

If you are on the 5 year you are not based at Langford, you go there once a week in first year. Most of your teaching will be in the school of chemistry and anatomy. It’s a bit of a walk from any of the coach stops for the one day you do go to Langford but it’s not awful x

Uni accom is also much cheaper than the options you are suggesting. KSS cheapest room (one remaining) is nearly 16k WITH the cash back and SLH only has rooms that are £460 a week+ left which is 22.5k a year AFTER cash back. Daylight robbery so not act like you are helping students

It’s not if she’s on the 5 year course as you don’t spend most of your time at Langford. If she’s on 4 year yes it’s a bit of a trek but a lot of the AGEP students don’t live near Langford they commute everyday from where they are living in city centre

Thank you, very useful feedback, it’s such a worry when you don’t know the area

Aren’t these all international, 2nd yr plus, postgrad accommodation? Where do UoB first years tend to book in private halls if main UoB accommodation is not available- honest answer please?

Hey all, I am thinking of moving to Metal Works and wondered if it is suitable for a mature student? How does everyone feel about the location/area etc after being there for a couple of weeks?

Thanks!
