Degree/career advice - MH nursing from counselling!!

hi. I am currently enrolled onto a msc counselling course and am wondering whether to switch to msc mental health nursing. I have worked as a HCA in a forensic inpatient mental health setting for almost 2 years and could see myself in the role as a MH nurse. I have also been told of the struggle to get a job in counselling however unsure if this applies as much to postgrad counselling?? I am enjoying the course however feel frustrated at not making a larger impact on clients lives only seeing them once a week for 50 minutes.
I know I would receive funding for MH nursing however also worry about 'wasting' my psychology degree as this was difficult!

Advice please
Have you made a decision?

No 🙃 But have had an offer for Msc mental health nursing beginning Jan 2025! Putting the counselling on pause for now
I think you should do it

This is correct about the job situation. I'm a counsellor and psychotherapist, and honestly, a masters is the bare minimum they want. Nearly all the nhs roles I've tried to apply for ( a large ccg) want doctorates, either clinical or counselling psychology. A lot of charity vacancies are about 50p/hr above min wage. It's just terrible atm 😣 I don't mean to be pessimistic in my post, but it's the harsh reality of this industry atm, and I'm looking at masters and docs to be able to secure a better future

thanks for your post. this is my worry - 4 years just to struggle finding a job? Or do my masters in MH nursing and have guaranteed job with more job prospects with my bachelors degree!

Exactly still to nursing. You’ll find a job everywhere. Maybe general nursing?
