Applicaton for 2025 university for modern languages degree

Hi I’m currently in year 12 and I am thinking of doing modern languages at uni. I need to think of which unis I want to apply to and so far I was thinking of St Andrews, Durham, Edinburgh, Bath (not spa) and Exeter.

I just wanted opinions on whether applying to Edinburgh, Durham and St Andrews would be a risky choice because they are all competitive unis. I have heard that by doing modern languages it can help as languages are in demand. But i’m just not too sure on what decision to make - as well as that I really liked the look of those three unis and their modules but I don’t want to apply to all three if it’s probable to not work out well.

Thank you so much for your help.

I think it depends on the language! In recent years I’ve heard mandarin being easier to get lower offers as there are less applicants

Hi- I was thinking of doing either French and Spanish or French and Russian. It depends on the course - at Durham for example I can do all three which is what I really liked about it.

Hi @Mousey2244!🌟

I'm so glad you're thinking about studying modern languages! As someone who has done a modern languages degree, I could assure you it's absolutely worth it, boosting your employability immensely. Let me tell you why I think the University of Essex would be a perfect place to start this journey!🎓✨

On our BA Modern Languages course you can study up to three languages choosing between French, German, Italian and Spanish from beginner or post-A level standard. Portuguese can be studied from a pre-A level standard. These languages can be studied alongside the language expert modules which cover a range of cultural and professional skills.🌎⭐️

Each of these languages are widely used in the business world, and we take you to a level of near-fluency; so many of our graduates have gone on to develop successful global careers with international firms looking for language specialists. 📊✨

In addition to the language skills you develop on our course, you also explore a range of modules on global cultures, histories, and politics, so that you can really understand another country, beyond just being able to communicate in the native language. Study topics including world cinema; translation, interpreting and subtitling; popular music; visual history and many more.🌈✨

We also offer a month-long summer course with fees paid for by us if you start a language from scratch via the intensive route. I personally went to Rome during summer and it was such an amazing experience which I think everyone studying languages should try!🔥

If you want a global outlook, are interested in human communication, and want to study for a degree with real-world practical value in a world-class department, welcome to Essex.🚀💫

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need more information. We can’t wait to welcome you to the Essex family! 🌟🎓

Warm regards,
Essex Student Rep - Renaldas✌️
I think it's ok to apply to all 3, since you can apply to 5 unis. Just make sure that you have 1or 2 options with lower requirements just in case

Hey @Mousey2244 👋

Let us know if you have any questions at all about what it's like to study at Essex 😊

Just to add to what Renaldas said, we've also got a Languages For All programme where you can learn additional languages from a beginner level alongside any degree, for free!

These are taught by either in-person evening classes or a Web based portfolio so it doesn't interfere with your timetabled lectures. It's a fun way to meet new people and learn a new skill. We've got British sign language and a whole host of other languages you might have thought about starting but never got round to it. These are assessed and you get a certificate that you can put towards your CV.

We've got a really active student union with over 120 student run societies to get involved with including arts, culture, languages, activities and sports. There's really something for everyone.

Good luck on your year 13 journey, it'll go by so fast!

Best wishes
Essex Student Rep - Hayley
