I feel very defeated right now. I worked extremely hard to achieve good a level grades but ended up getting really poor results. I feel like I lost all my confidence and am starting to believe I can not get into the university of my choice and study a course that could actually benefit me even if I repeat year 13. I thought if I worked really hard it would work out but it just led me to be disappointed.

The problem with A levels is that working hard and working effectively are two very different things. Ten minutes of learning how to apply a concept is far better than 10 hours trying to memorise information without understanding it, even in subjects such as History. How an event led to others is important as is being able to apply scientific theories. Find out why you didn’t do as well as you hoped and then go from there. Uni isn’t for everyone and maybe you’d be better going into the job market straight away. Don’t panic. Analyse your strengths and weaknesses and then decide what you really want to do rather than what you think other people are expecting you to do. This is your life not theirs.

Maybe you can repeat a year.

It sounds like things feel quite overwhelming for you following your A Level results. We hear that since receiving these results you have lost all of your confidence. It is really important that you are looking after yourself right now. There are some really great resources on the Mind website which we think would be helpful for you to take a look at.
Often talking about how we are feeling can be helpful. It could also be a great support for you to talk to someone who you trust to help you to decide which next step is the best one for you right now. This could be speaking with a Friend, Family Member, or a Trusted Teacher.
