remarking eng lit and geo alevel

missed my A*AA offer at my firm (got an AAB) and am now heading to my insurance. have also asked for remarks but it sucks as i was 6 marks away from an A* for geo (edexcel) and 5 marks from an A for englit (aqa). took a look at my individual paper marks for englit - got an A in paper 1, a C in paper 2 (an 11/25 which dragged the grade down) and an A* for the coursework. my teachers have advised me to get a remark asw but how possible is it that i could've just gotten a harsh examiner? also checked my geo marks and got about 10/20 and 12/20 on twenty markers for paper 1, when i'm so used to getting much higher during mocks and in lessons and have never gotten so low before (also an A* in coursework). furthermore it's strange as i felt fairly contented straight after completing these papers.

am not sure whether to feel hopeful or not but for now i'm preparing to head to my insurance. any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! :frown:

I'm in a similar position to you (missed an A* in Edexcel Eng Lit by 1 mark when I was getting straight A* all throughout sixth form). I never even questioned getting the A* because I'd been so consistent and was happy with the papers. I also seem to have had a very harsh examiner as I got 36/40 on one of my papers and 33/60 on another when the quality of response is very similar.

Have you requested your papers back and read your responses again? I would highly recommend you'll be able to tell if thes examiners were along the right lines or completely off, as I feel mine were. If they're willing, I'd also recommend asking teachers to read your scripts over and give you their opinion on them.

5/6 marks are generally considered a lot to gain for remarks but it's definitely not impossible, especially for humanities. People have gained more from them before and personally I think I'm missing at least 10 marks. I know this is a really stressful/annoying situation but you should absolutely still feel proud of yourself and take comfort in your knowledge of your own ability. I'm sure you'll have a great time at your insurance and, if the remarks yield the results you need, you could always try ringing up your firm and explaining the situation to them? Best of luck!!

thanks for your reply! yes - i can totally relate to that! immediately after the papers i felt pretty satisfied with my answers and so i was very shocked when i found out i've essentially done much worse than how i've been performing in my mocks/tests all this while.

and yes, i've requested my scripts back from my school's exams office however they have yet to come back to me. after thinking about it i guess it's also possible that i have completely missed the point of the questions and went off on a tangent, but i'll never know unless i reread my answers ahaha.

you're right - but at least this will give somewhat of a peace of mind. you've asked for a remark as well right? if so, wishing you all the best with that! thank you so much for your kind words - thankfully my firm (LSE) does accept remarks up till the 6th of sept and if my grades don't change, i'll be headed to Bristol!

all the best to you re. your marks and your university journey! am sure you'll have a great time and do keep me updated if your remarks end up in your favour!

Same boat brother. Got AAB with one mark off an A in history and 5 marks off the A* boundary for English. But because it’s weighted 2x, does that mean we only have to get 2.5, basically 3 marks for the A*?

TYY!! Yeah the 10 marks were on the paper I scored the lowest on so I feel pretty vindicated lol. I did Edexcel, but I keep hearing things about AQA taking forever too hopefully they get their act together soon and I'll keep my fingers crossed

If it is any consolation, I sent off my Politics Paper (Edexcel) for a remark as felt the marks to be inaccurate. I achieved an A overall initially (only 1 mark off an A*). Just had my Paper 1 remark back and it went up 7 marks which for an essay makes a huge difference and also meant that I was moved up to an A* overall. It definitely can happen, especially where there is a big disparity in marking.

woww congratulations!! i managed to go up 6 marks too to get an A* for geography (edexcel) - the fact that such grade disparities exist is insane, thank god for remarks! unfortunately my remark for englit (AQA) didn't go up though, but i think it could be an AQA thing ahahah. two of my friends also asked for an AQA remark but theirs didn't go up too ☹️ congrats on ur remark tho !!
