Don't buy text books!

Prompted by a question on another forum, here is some advice advice about how not to waste lots of money.

Do not go out and buy tons of textbooks!
You will have an enormous, well stocked library, most stuff is accessed online - and for most books on any reading list, you will usually only look at odd chapters, or at best, use them for one topic. AND, if you do need to buy a general text for any 1st year course, wait until you get there and you can buy a second hand copy from one of last year's students, or Ebay, or even the local Oxfam bookshop.

For this reason, discourage any well-meaning relatives from giving you Waterstones etc gift cards as a Going to Uni present - they will still be in your wallet at the end of your degree. Ask for Sainsburys, Boots, or Uber gift cards - these will actually be some use.

Excellent advice as ever, @McGinger (PRSOM).

Some things to add for those using their university library:

1.

If you're using books from the university library, remember that they're not your personal property, and they are a shared resource. Don't write, scribble, annotate; and really really don't use a highlighter pen in them.

2.

Make sure you return books once you no longer need them. That allows others to find them on the library shelves when they want them. Plus it means you're less likely to lose them and have to pay for replacements -- and for some books the cost of replacements can run into hundreds of pounds.

3.

University libraries generally provide a way to recall books from borrowers who have them out on loan. Don't be shy of making use of this facility. Do keep an eye on your email and promptly return any books that are recalled from you.
