Applying To Medicine

I’ve finished my AS and my results aren’t the best I got:

Biology - A
Chem - B
Maths - D
Welsh Baccalaureate - Idk they haven’t gave my grade

My teacher says I can get my predicted to be one up my results so I would be on A*AC and idk my welsh bacc grade we get it next yr in A2 and i’m not sure if I’m getting a predicted on welsh bacc or not?

Are the grades good enough to apply for medicine or not? I’m unsure whether to apply to medicine or to do a science related degree such as pharmacology or biomedical science and go for graduate entry?

I don’t think you can apply to medicine with a predicted C. I think you could either resit or take a gap year to use your actual grades

Hi, for clarity, these are AS grades ? If so, when shortlisting for interview the vast majority of med schools will disregard AS level results (although you have to record them). Some med schools also disregard (or don’t take account of) predicted grades. ** see below.

It is very good that the A*A is in Bio and Chem. It would be much better though if the Maths was a B at least predicted, is there extra work you can do to help get it up? Or talk to teachers ? Can you resit ONE of your Maths modules? Could you do that alongside your A levels and Welsh Bacc without dropping the other grades?

Please pay very close attention to your Welsh Bacc. If you get an A min on results day, in it and apply strategically, there are a fair few med schools who will accept it as your third A level. So even get it predicted as an A if they won’t budge on the MATHS.

If you can find out informally how you are doing on that it may make your maths module resit question easier.

All is not lost. If you are yet to do your UCAT work as hard as you can to get it up as high as you can. That will really help you. Don’t neglect the SJT. Sometimes I have found that if your UCAT is strong it is an extra lever to use when presenting evidence to teachers that you can achieve (and are actively working towards) the higher grade.

Good luck.

** GCSE grades are in many cases more important than predicted grades so I am saying all this without knowing what they or your UCAT are.

When you have your final UCAT score go to the which med school Megathread and put your info in in the format of the first post.

If you want to do medicine. Push hard and aim for undergrad medicine.
If you want to do pharmacology as a career, do pharmacology!

They are my AS grades. I’m planning on resitting the maths modules but not sure which one because I got a C in Pure and E in Applied. The pure is worth 62.5% of my AS grade and the applied is worth 37.5%. So I am not very sure on whether to resit the applied because it’s less weighted, so idk if it would help get my score up or not. I got 6 A* and 5 A’s in my gcse and I haven’t sat my UCAT yet.

Ok. That’s helpful. And good luck with your UCAT.

I would speak to your teachers about the resit in Maths and go for the one that will make the biggest substantive difference to your overall A level. Without trashing your ability to get three A’s minimum out of the 4, as well as all of the other stuff hat you will have to do in year 13…

Do treble check what the Welsh Bacc predicted is, as as much of a time consuming thing it is to do, it can pay dividends at the point of application as it accepted as a third A level for several medical schools. It’s compulsory, and the benefits of an A in Welsh Bacc are significant over a B. But you have to hit all the modules and not just hang it all on your Dissertation. I know they have had some covid flex on this but think that has moved on now.

The number of medical schools that will allow A level resits is relatively small without extenuating circumstances. Quite a few will not count an AS resit as a resit as long as it is taken alongside your A2s. However, more disregard a single module resit of an AS as the AS is then not recertificated. This is one of the sole benefits of the Welsh system of having to do 3 min plus WBacc - is that it is still modular. England isn’t, so med schools cannot apply a blanket approach to AS as many don’t have qualifying AS exams. Once you know where your strategic choices are, it is still worth emailing them directly setting out your AS (or AS module) resit plans, and making sure it’s allowed.

One option is to start doing both maths modules next term with a view to taking a decision before submitting your final UCAS form.

Still all hangs on the UCAT (and don’t forget SJT!) though. Good luck with that!
