Higher Chemistry

Hi! I have currently just enrolled in the higher chemistry course by the SQA and am working through the first unit (chemical changes and structure) and I was wondering if anyone who has achieved an A a this level could share their study methods so I can stary early. It is important to me that I achieve an A and despite working all year at Nat 5 and achieving A's all year I ended up with a B in the recent exam season which I have put down to not studying effectively so any help is really appreciated. The current methods I use are:

- creating flashcards of the topics in my own words
- practice questions
- writing definitions over and over until I remember

Between work and school and extracurriculars I am able to commit about two hours study time per week for chemistry.

Hey, i got an A at higher last year (after hating it all year). One of my biggest tips, esp since a lot of SQA exams are all about memorising is to find silly yet effective ways of remembering key concepts. For example, my quizlet flashcards were FULL of silly acronyms like EFNASEIES (Electrons Further from Nuclear Attraction, increased Screening Effect from Inner Electron Shells aka Efna’s eyes??? For first ionisation energy) which ik are so silly but would help me basically memorise the marking scheme so i was writing exactly what the SQA were looking for. Things like ionisation energy etc r very important to make these acronyms for since they make up a lot of ‘A style’ marks in the exam and usually have the same kind of answer so can be easy marks once you know them well. This is just one that really helped me and sorry if this makes no sense but lmk if i can help with anything else!

another REALLY useful revision tool is making spider diagrams/ mind maps. I know loads of people love flash cards but they really don't work for me. I find spider diagrams/ mind maps are really good at making connections in your mind between different topics and information.

(i know this is a really late reply but I am also doing higher chemistry and have found them to be super useful so just wanted to say in case it helps at all.🙂)
