jobs at uni

I’m planning on getting a job in uni, preferably on campus especially as it’s my first year. I know the jobs go quick so I wanna know what to do. But I don’t really have any idea on how to apply for a job. I’ve pretty much made my CV. I keep seeing videos saying how you need to bring a passport but then my parents said they will not be allowing me to bring my passport bc it’s just dangerous and that having my ID (license) and national insurance number(smt like that) would just be fine?
I’m so confused abt if they are right and I don’t want to get to uni and miss out the opportunity to get a job bc I don’t have the right stuff. My parents are the type of people to always think they are right and they don’t really understand how quick university jobs go. Do I need my passport? I’m just scared of losing it and my parents yelling at me

Hi there,

I know I here at BCU there are usually opportunities to work as a student ambassador all year round, so this could be the same at your new uni. But I would check your unis website for any vacancies when you can to see if there's anything you can apply for as you start in September.

Getting your CV together is a great start too, so keep updating it and maybe have a draft cover letter on the go which you can amend for specific jobs should they ask for one.

Typically when you start a new job you will need your national insurance number and proof of right to work. In the UK, you can use your passport or birth certificate as proof of right to work, but a driving license isn't valid proof unfortunately. I would get together with your parents and have a look at the government website to check you have everything you need to find work while at uni.

Here's a link to the relevant webpage: https://www.gov.uk/prove-right-to-work

Hope this helps. 🙂

Hiya,

Here at the University of Southampton we also have many opportunities for student ambassadors throughout the year. We also have part time jobs working in our campus shop, bar, cafe, reception etc. I would check your university website for vacancies and see if you can sign up for job alerts when new opportunities are available. I personally got a job at my uni library this way. These jobs are likely to go quite quickly. For these you will need your passport for a right to work check.
Alternatively, if you are in or near a city there is likely to be a wide range of other part time jobs available, many of which like to hire students. This would hopefully give you lots more options but transportation may have to be a factor you consider.
Before looking for jobs I would suggest having an idea of the maximum number of hours you would be able to work a week so you don't put too much on your plate, especially in first year.

I hope you find a job,
Abby
