Personal statement medicine

Hey guys. Has anyone completed their personal statement yet? If so, how long does it typically take to write it?

Hey guys. Has anyone completed their personal statement yet? If so, how long does it typically take to write it?

Hello! I finished the first draft of my vet med personal statement last week. I worked on it for around 30 to 40 minutes every day for 4 or 5 days, including sorting through work experience, reflecting, figuring out what bits I wanted to include, and cutting down the word count. I will ask teachers and friends for feedback so that I can make improvements.
However, there is no set time it takes to write a personal statement, do it at your own pace and always ask for help and feedback if you're stuck!

I am currently working on my medicine one and have reached the conclusion stage of the first draft! It should typically take 2 or 3 days to do- you will probably need one day or half a day to brainstorm and write down ideas.

Hi there!

Getting started early on a personal statement helps to take the pressure off later down the line so I would get started as soon as you can!

It took me about a week to write it with a couple of different drafts and I would definitely recommend getting someone to check over it as well!

It depends on your course as to what to include in your personal statement but I have linked our personal statement guide here as this is really helpful to get you started on your personal statement and it also highlights some workshops we are running online!

I hope this helps,

Hi, it will take as long as it takes ! Not very helpful I know. But make sure you give yourself enough time. Esp for med, as school deadlines are often quite some time before the UCAS deadline. But quite often teachers want to know you are making progress/ have first draft at the start of term.

The big issue for medicine though is that the PS isn't really a key part of the selection for interview process for most med schools. So barring red flags, they may look at it before or after interview. Or not at all. Many sift for interview based on a UCAT or GCSE or a mix of both.

The problem is that there are some that REALLY use it as a key part of their selection for interview process. Now if you have one of those then you can gear your apS to its requirements. If you have two or more it's more tricky to blend it. If you have 4 that don't care about it then ....

Your med schools are best decided strategically on the basis of your UCAT and GCSEs.

So if you haven't done your UCAT yet, or sense checked your strategic choices yet with the "which medical school megathread", and read your respective application policies in DETAIL then I wouldn't stress too much about it at this stage...

Good luck.
