A levels without the GCSE

A friend and I both took Spanish for our GCSEs, and we're now considering studying both Spanish and French at A Level. She plans to take Maths alongside, while I’m taking English Language. The thing is that neither of us took GCSE French, but our school does allow us to start French from scratch at A Level. We’ve been self-studying French over the summer to prepare.

We’re concerned that we might struggle with French, especially since we both want to get into top universities. As an alternative, my friend is also interested in taking Economics, but she would much rather take French. I, on the other hand, really despise anything other than languages, but I’d probably choose History or Economics if necessary. There's also an option to join a French course offered as a club at our school, but we're still unsure. We’re wondering if anyone has experience starting a language from scratch at A Level, or if anyone would recommend for or against it.

Don’t choose your courses based so closely on what your friend wants to do, it’s up to you so take subjects YOU enjoy!
Does your school have entry requirements for taking a level French? Usually previous study is expected as it’s very difficult if you haven’t previous studied the language.
With regards other subejcts, dont take a subject you dislike as it will make your life much harder. What subject did you enjoy at GCSE? Maybe have a look through the courses offered by your prospective sixth form and see what interests you?
If you do really want to take French maybe do a GCSE past paper and see how you score. If its more than a 6 then you might be alright but if not then its not really advisable, the club sounds like a good option though and could be good to add to your ps.

I'll speak for myself and not my friend here, the school does have requirements although they're very vague it's mostly just "high language ability and overall grades".Honestly at GCSE I enjoyed literally nothing except Spanish, which is why it's so hard for me to choose another subject. I did a past reading and listening paper over the last 2 days and got a 9 on the reading and an 8 on the listening, I'd imagine my writing would be slightly lower and my speaking significantly lower though.Yeah I am considering just doing it at the club and I would absolutely do it if there was 3 other a levels I wanted to do.

If you genuinely really enjoy languages and are capable of doing well (as you’ve demonstrated) i think it could actually be a really good option if viable- basically if your school agrees and you feel happy with it then go for it! If you feel like you’re struggling after a few weeks maybe have a backup plan but if you honestly can’t think of another subject you could do it might just work 🙂 my best advice would be to email your school and ask them what they think, I have limited knowledge but it sounds like you can learn fast and so picking up french might not be as much of an issue for you as you’re so passionate about it. Best of luck!

I have a casual interview with my French teacher on Friday where she'll say if she will let me on the course, thank you!!

I’m not sure, but if you end up doing French there’s an app that can help called Beelinguapp and it has books that you can read and listen to in French with an English translation at the bottom, this might help you.
