Sfe for a certHE course

Hi,
I’m completing a one year certHE course in biomedical science at university of Roehampton this September. How can I get student finance for this course? Is it eligible for funding? I’m wishing to transfer to optometry after the one year at city university of London. Please advise, thank you!

This is a high risk choice. You will essentially be using your gift year of funding. A CertHE would normally be used to transfer into year 2 of a new course not to restart from year one.

Have you checked if the course is accepted or recommended by city for their optometry course?

Retaking A levels or other level 3 qualifications to meet the entry requirements for optometry would normally be a better option and would give you more options.

Yes, I emailed city to ask about this course as it’s not usually listed on their website. They said they do consider it if I was to get 60% or above upon completion. What should I do?

As I said I would always recommend retaking A levels or other level 3 qualifications instead of a CertHE. A CertHE is an expensive option that will limit your choices significantly.

Which other level 3 qualification would you recommend?

Would funding not work in the same way as a foundation year would for a standard 5 year degree?

An integrated foundation year extends the length of the course so you would still have the option to repeat a year later on if you needed to. Although again I would normally recommend resitting A levels over a FY.

A CertHE uses up your gift year of funding so eats into available funding once you move onto a degree course. It’s a cynical move by universities to get government funding and higher fees that they wouldn’t get for a freestanding foundation year. Universities don’t offer these courses for the benefit of students - they do it for their own benefit. They know it disadvantages students when they move on and they don’t care.

Talk to City about what qualifications are best suited for entry to their optometry degree.

I understand, that makes sense, thank you!

Are there any other level 3 qualifications you would recommend to get into optometry? A levels were a very tough time for me and I want to ideally move past that and do something else which will allow me to get in to optom.
Thank you!

It might be that they suggest you resit one of your A levels and pick up a BTEC or OCR Tech alongside that.

But if they do say A levels are best then you don’t have to resit in the same school or college. New teachers and a new location could help make things work better for you

Hi, yeah I just want to confirm with you guys if my funding will be affected. I’m undertaking a certHE in biomedical sciences at university of roehampton. I’m then planning to progress onto the MOptom course at city university. How will funding work for this? Please let me know thanks!
Hi there,

Would this be the 4 year course which has an integrated masters? You only hold a certHE qualification and have only have 1 year of previous study? Is this for the 2024/25 academic year?

Thanks, Drew

Hi, yes the optometry course would be the 4 year course with an integrated masters. At the moment I’ve only done A levels. I will be starting the certHE in September, and this will be for the 2024/25 academic year- so a one year course. I’m then hoping to progress to optometry in September 2025. Hope that makes sense!
Hi there,

If you were to do the 1 year course then when you apply for the 4 year course you would still be eligible for funding. You would only have 4 years left of funding for the new course so you would not have an additional year of funding if you had to repeat a year.

Thanks, Drew

Just to confirm, I would be eligible for the 1 year course and the 4 year course? Thank you!
Hi there. Yes that is correct. As mentioned above the only way this would change is if you had to repeat any years of the course. Thanks, David
