Applying for funding for new course after withdrawing

I have withdrawn from a course that I did for one year (so I still have three years of funding left) only recently and have applied via Clearing for a new course. Note that I suspended studies for a year (2023 - 2024, completed year of study in 2023) before deciding to withdraw.

However, when applying for SFE, I noticed that my application says June 2022 - 2027 (which is not true). I don’t think my original application for SFE at my first university has been cancelled yet. I have called SFE this evening to tell them I have withdrawn and that I don’t know what to do next but the operator was not helpful and just said to change my university details and submit the application???

Should I call back and ask for my application (which still seems to be linked to my first university rather than my new university as it is asking me to ‘re-apply’ for funding rather than apply as a new student) to be cancelled rather than trying to change my university details in my current application? Do I need to fill in a change of COS? My first university said they will send notification to SFE but I don’t know how long that will take and my new course starts in four weeks so I am terrified that I will not be able to get funding before my new course starts…

I appreciate this makes literally no sense but I am very stressed and unable to think properly! Will I be able to get funding in time for the start of my course? Thank you.

Hi Andrew. If you have withdrawn, we need your University to confirm this with us by sending us an electronic Change of Circumstances to allow us to update this. Whilst waiting on this, have you reapplied yet for your next course? Did you apply as a returning student? Thanks, David

Hi, I have filled out all of the information I need in the form for re-applying but when about to submit it says that the course runs from ‘June 2022 to 2027.’ Because of this, I haven’t chosen to submit it as I’m not sure if I am allowed to do that and / or if it means I will get in trouble for it.

Does this mean I have to wait until SFE confirm my withdrawal from my first university before I can re-apply or can I do it now?

Thank you. In this case, you need to ask the University to send this over. In the mean time, you can apply but you may need to apply by post as you will now need to apply as a New student as your previous application is withdrawn. You will need to send a PN1 application form and you can find this here;

Thank you for your help, this has helped a lot! If I apply by post this year, will I be able to apply online next year? Also, will my university get my tuition fee at the start of the course if I submit my application by the end of this week?

Hi there,

Yes you would be able to apply on your online account next year. The application process can take 6-8 weeks to process so they 1st Tuition Fee Loan payment may be late.

Thanks, Drew

Hi, sorry for asking so many questions but do I need to send everything from the PN1 form to SFE or can I just fill in and send the relevant pages (i.e. not printing everything out and only sending in pages that apply to me rather than every question / section)?

Hi andrew_b43,

You will need to send the entire PN1 form for the application to be accepted.

Thanks,
Calum

Another question - section 5, questions b1 and b2; I can apply for the NHS LSF as part of my allied health course but when checking the PN1 notes, it says that "If you are eligible to apply for a non-income assessed bursary - you are not eligible for any student finance." I selected "Yes" to b1 and "Non-income assessed" for b2.

NHS LSF is not means tested and I thought you could apply for student funding if you are eligible for the LSF? Is anyone from SLC or SFE able to clear this up for me? Thank you!

Hi there. This was the case for pre 2017/2018 Academic Year courses. This is no longer the case and you can still be entitled to funding while receiving the NHS LSF. Looks like they haven't updated the notes on the PN1.

The Government announced that in the 2017/18 AY new students studying Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professional (AHP) courses will no longer receive bursary funding from the NHS and will instead receive regular SFE support in the same manner as students studying non-NHS courses.

The NHS LSF is a new style training grant as opposed to the old style NHS bursaries, which you can apply for through the NHS while receive SFE funding. Thanks, Leah.

Thank you. So for the PN1 section 5, question b1 should I select “Yes” or “No” in response to the question “are you eligible to apply for bursary?”

Hi Andrew, this is dependant on whether you're applying for a bursary through the NHS or not. The grant, as Leah advised, is a separate source of funding. So you'd put 'no' if it's just the grant you're applying for. Thanks, Jason

Hi again (sorry!). I have sent in my application (including my original birth certificate) and SFE have received it. The only problem is that on the application online, it says that I need to upload evidence of my identity, despite sending my birth certificate with my PN1.

Is this just a matter of waiting for SFE to upload it for me? Or do I need to upload it myself? I currently have a photocopy of my birth certificate if that will suffice as evidence.

Hi Andrew. Do you know the date that we would have received the form and the evidence? Thanks, David

Hi David,

My tracking states that it was received on Monday 2nd September.

Hi andrew_b43,

ID evidence is currently taking around 17 working days with subject to change depending on our current volumes.

It should be processed and updated for you around the 26th of September.

Keep an eye on your account around that date as you will be updated directly.

Hi again sorry - I’m aware SLC are very busy still but I’ve noticed that the date I am due to receive an update regarding my application keeps changing? It says 4th Oct today but if I check tomorrow it’ll probably say the 7th. This is what has happened every day since 27th Sept. Why is this?

Hi andrew_b43,

All timescales we provide are estimates and these are subject to change.

Hello again - some confusion this morning! I messaged an advisor yesterday after my application status changed to ‘processing.’ The advisor said my application has been approved, pending me needing to confirm how long I have studied for previously. I am apparently due to receive an email soon to tell me what to do.

I thought that because I have only studied for 3 years before, I am still entitled to full student finance including maintenance loan support. Also, I am studying an AHP course, which I thought was an exception.

So to my horror this morning, I log on to SFE and check my inbox and I see a letter that says ‘you are not entitled to maintenance loan support’ and I’m so confused why this??? I thought I was still eligible for full funding (I did get a CertHE from my previous university, but I’m studying for a BSc, not a CertHE, so I’m so confused why I am not getting full funding????).

Is anyone able to clear up why this has happened? Am I actually ineligible for maintenance loan support or is this just an error?

Hi there. In this case, I would advise that you contact us again either over the phone or via live chat from your online account as we cannot access your account from here. Due to this, I cannot confirm why you have not been awarded the Maintenance Loan. If your course is an exception course and you are not already registered in this field then you should be eligible for the Fees but again, I cannot answer this fully without access to your account to check this further. Thanks, David
