University of Leeds - Devonshire Hall

Hey! Just wondering if anyone had a link to a group chat for Dev in 2024, since that'll be my halls in September. If anyone has one to link me, or is staying in Dev themselves and is happy to connect, I'd be really grateful. Thank you!!

Sorry I should of been more precise, "uni buddy community" is an app endorsed by University of leeds. They were promoting it on their instagram stories 👍👍👍 it basically works as a massive gc community for leeds

Loving it lots !! Great social life not only in the club sense but community, lots of green spaces and easy access to hiking trails from Leeds and non drinking events!! Depending on your course that experience will differ but teaching within the philosophy and politics department has been great xx

I really love it personally, back home my average walk to sixth form was 30 mins. From dev to campus it's ~20 mins. (~30-40 to city centre) Some people complain it's far but I'm used to walking and Leeds is a very walkable city. I literally walk back home from the club and I'm fine.

Dev is also the most active uni accom with events, they do a couple oxbridge style forms per semester cause its a historical accom (used to be an all boys I think???) I think it's quite cool. They also do balls the winter ball was quite fun, very prom style

The building itself is very pretty and true to pictures that are shown, we have a gym and a big music area/studio (alot of artsy students are attracted to it as a result lmao) we have a pool table room upstairs aswell. We also have chickens which is insane I get woken up by a rooster in the morning (it literally doesn't feel real)

A word of warning not everyone stays in the main block that's viewed on the pic on the page, there's also orchard, grov, coach house, however all carry the style (no matter what u won't be living in a concrete flatblock)

I'm staying currently in coach house and I'm loving it, in fact we don't get woken up by the main block fire alarm so it's a big plus!

Truly recommend dev if your considering it it's very lovely and I've loved my year here so far xx

thanks so much for this! i was attracted to the accomodation because the surrounding area seems calmer than those closer to city centre or campus, and also the fact i'm not really a big party person because i don't drink. however people online just say "it's dead" or "don't go" with little explanation. i'm going to visit leeds soon and i am going to try and see the accomodations and their locations. how many people do you have in a flat?

It's bs saying dev is dead automatically. It all depends on the people, I think it's not traditionally a party accom but I've been to a couple of flat partys in dev and it really counts on the people. That being said one of my flatmates doesn't drink and I know a handle full of others that also don't so you'll be fine. Also also James Baillie and Lupton are just round the corner so just make friends with people from those accoms if u care that much lmao

Your also correct the placement of headingley makes it very nice, quiet and peaceful so it's quite nice to go back to <3

I live with 7 others! (This is one of the bigger accom to people ratios) most have 5 ish and I got really lucky I love all my flatmates ❤️❤️

Would you say it’s quite a sociable accommodation or no, as I heard from reviews many of the students aren’t too sociable or want to go out aswell as the wardens shut down the pres or after parties?

I've been happy with it! My flat goes out quite often and you make friends with people outside the accom aswell

Silence policies aren't really real and I've been to a couple flat parties and prees in dev and they never got shut down. I think people overreact tbh

Is your flat a one off with social people. Or would you say there’s many people in Devonshire halls that are sociable and go out. How would you compare it with the social life at Lupton compared to Devonshire halls. Ideally for me Devonshire halls would be the most convenient as it’s closer to campus and looks nicer I’m not sure if I’d much prefer the social life of Lupton. To be honest that’s my main worry or thing that puts me off.

No I wouldn't say I'm a one off example I know alot of people who go out and drink, you'll definitely be able to merge with the right social people there.

I've been invited to a Lupton house party and it was quite good and from what my friends have said they make friends with the entire block which if you like that and you like the cheap price of it then go for it!

If you prefer the look of dev and the closeness of it to campus I'd say choose dev cause you find social people where ever u go if again ur extroverted. And also club nights etc. ur accom isn't the only highlight of ur social life, make friends with other people from other accoms and with James Baillie and Lupton round the corner it's really not that deep and also dev can host lmao

But again this is just my view I've really enjoyed my stay here I'd recommend 🥳🥳
