The Student Room Group

I need advice as a mum

We have 4 children, all approaching college/uni age. We live in Wales and my eldest daughter wants to go to a Welsh uni and would need accommodation. She has no savings and wants to start this year. My husband & I have a combined income of £50k with a mortgage and loans. We struggle at the end of each month until we get paid and have £1500 in savings. We both have a car as we work in different locations.

My daughter wants us to contribute to her uni application, but it scares the hell out of me.

I don’t want to let her down but equally I can’t commit to offering financial help, especially if the other children have uni plans.

It’s really stressing me out.

Hi

Will try to post some links when I get home from work. Welsh student finance is a little different to the English one. I think it works a bit more favourably so it may be better that you have heard concerning stories which might not apply in your case.

This page shows the Welsh student finance: https://www.studentfinancewales.co.uk/undergraduate-finance/full-time/tuition-fee-and-living-cost-students/

This link shows how much money your daughter can receive to live on: https://www.studentfinancewales.co.uk/undergraduate-finance/full-time/tuition-fee-and-living-cost-students/what-s-available/

So - through a mix of loans and grants it would appear that she can get £12,150 a year for living costs. Maybe some extra money for some healthcare courses.

Thank you, it seems less daunting than I had in my mind. 😅
