UCAT

Hi, I am currently in yr12 now and will be going to yr13 this sept. I plan to do medicine and thought it would be better if I take a gap year after yr13. I have started my UCAS application but still haven't done the ucat. So is it better to do my ucat this year (2024) or during my gap year

You have to take the UCAT at the same cycle of application, so if you're planning on doing medicine and going to university in Sept/Oct 2025 (Right after year 13 with no gap year) then you have to the sit the UCAT this year by the end of Sept 2024. If you're planning on taking a gap year, then you have to do the UCAT between June-Sept 2025 as you plan on going to medical school in Sept/Oct 2026.

Yes, if you're planning to take a gap year, you would have to restart your UCAS application this time next year. Unless you have put on your UCAS application that you plan on going to university in 2026. I would make sure with the official UCAS website and your school.

If you want to do a gap year then there is no point doing your UCAT this year unless you're going to do deferred entry (which I'm not sure if all Universities accept this). If you do the UCAT this year then it probably means you're starting uni right after Year 13.
