What happens if no college accepts me?

So currently my grades suck, I'm talking U in English Lit and a 2 in English Lan with a 3 in Maths. I know I still have like 10 months to get my act together but it's basically the same in pretty much all my subjects so I don't think I'm going to be able to manage it all. With that said, looking at all the colleges around me they require something like 5 x grade 4's including English Lan and Maths at minimum. If I don't meet these requirements and get denied by every college, what happens? I've done loads of digging online and found that in most cases the Gov don't actually care if you go or not so I probably could get away with it but I doubt my parents would like that. Obviously I am working to improve my grades (my own fault to begin with for moving schools in Year 9 cause I didn't like the standard of teaching at my old school, ironic) but I want to be prepared for worst case scenario just in case. Will anything happen?

You’ll have to check for your area specifically but where I live there are colleges which offer vocational subejcts (so not sixth forms) where you can take level 1 or level 2 (gcse equivalent) qualifications and then progress to a similar course once you’ve finished them.
So for example you could fail all your exams and then go and do a level 1 qualification in media whilst resitting English and maths, then process to a level 2 in media, then a level 3 in media (all btecs). You will have to keep resitting English and maths if you fail them until you pass or leave school i think.
Hopefully this year your school will give you more info on options for you post-16 in careers or pshe days or assemblies. If not, ask your school’s post-16 manager or careers lead what your options are 🙂 . Best of luck with year 11!

The requirements I stated are to get into the colleges at all for any course with most courses then having some extra such as a Computer Science course requiring a 6 in Maths and 5 in Computer Science so I need decent grades to get into college at all. I was wondering if maybe it's similar to schools so if none you apply to accept you the government will force the nearest to you to offer a place and then maybe I'd have to retake a load of GCSE's that way or if I'd end up just straight up not going to college.

You have to be in some form of education i believe but this could be an apprenticeship whilst retaking GCSEs. Are you looking at sixth forms offering a levels? The requirements for these are higher compared to vocational courses I was discussing. It’s highly unlikely you would be sent to the nearest and forced to resit a lot of GCSEs although some colleges will allow you to take a GCSE program then progress to a levels or another course later. I would provide more specific info but I obviously dont know where you are living- if you would be comfortable to provide this i might be able to have a look for you but if not then that’s absolutely fine and i completely understand, no pressure. I would advise looking on a site like Locrating to find nearby sixth forms or just searching for colleges in your area might work. There has to be courses for people who fail their exams and need to take a vocational whilst resitting maths and English.

I'm looking at both College's and Sixth Forms across South Wiltshire and West Hampshire as I currently live near the border although I'll be moving house next May and currently don't know where to (bad planning, thanking my parents for that). I do want to do an apprenticeship but I've found that the requirements are generally even higher than any other options so it's looking pretty unlikely for me. I've also found that while some do offer GCSE courses it's either foreign languages such as Spanish or one offers Maths and English Language but that's the second furthest from me I'm considering so depending on where I move it'd be unrealistic for me to get there

If you’re moving in May it is probably worth waiting until you have a better idea of where you are moving to before looking for options because you wont be attending any of the colleges in your local area anyway. If you figure out where it is you’re moving to at a later date I would be willing to help you find some options if you needed to or you could start a new thread asking if anyone knows any colleges for your grade profile in the area. Best of luck with year 11!

Only problem with that is most colleges require you to apply by spring term so January/February latest and we won't know where we're moving then. I think my parents want to move based on where I go to college which isn't useful in the slightest. Thanks for your help!

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Where I live you can apply for a place on results day to a school and they’ll see if they have a place for you. Obviously that’s not the ideal scenario but it shows that you should be able to find somewhere even if things dont go as planned with the application scheduling
