part time work in canterbury

hi! im currently looking for a part time job 2 support myself during uni term. ive already applied for a few positions (thru places like indeed and totaljobs), but i havent heard back from any and its a little worrying. are there any places to look in particular as a student? im open to any kind of work (retail, hospitality etc)

Congratulations on getting into university! 😊 What will you be studying?🎓️

I'm sorry that you haven't had any luck yet, but don't lose hope! It might be worth phoning the companies who you have applied to, to follow up about your application, sometimes recruitment can take a while!

If you are coming to the University of Kent, there is the KentUnion Jobshop who have part-time work/shifts available during term time, such as working at the campus co-op, and club, the Venue.

There is also the Student Ambassador scheme, which I am part of, and as far as I know will be running again in September. I have particularly loved working for the university as an ambassador because I have been able to work around my studies and have been able to work in so many different environments, such as on campus, during open days, and work with students at school visit days.

I hope this has been helpful! There's lots of shops and restaurants in Canterbury town centre too, so it may be worth keep applying for these if you are looking for a more structured part-time job.

hi!! thanks 4 ur reply! im studying astrophysics, space science and astronomy! :] i will try to follow up on the jobs ive already applied 4, thank for the tip!! could you tell me more about the jobshop and student ambassador schemes. i read that the union venues do their recruitment in January, but id ideally like to find a job before that with rent and all lol.

It's good that you're planning ahead and thinking about part-time work to support you around your studies!

The student ambassador scheme

•

Working as a student Student Ambassador you will be representing the university during lots of different work opportunities.

•

For example, I have been into local schools which are partnered with the university, have worked with students on event days, and have worked as a classroom assistant on an Access to Higher Education course that the university is running.

•

From my experience, I have signed up for the offers that I would like to do, so there hasn't been a certain number of hours that I have been contracted to work, I have just picked up work when I have been available, which is great if you're looking to develop your skills and employability around university, part-time work, while earning a little bit of cash too!

•

Applications open in September and I would definitely recommend applying as soon as possible as I have worked with lots of lovely ambassadors and staff and have really enjoyed learning new skills and meeting new people through this experience.

Kent Union Jobshop

•

Kent Union Jobshop is ran by Kent Union and offers part-time work for students around their studies.

•

I have worked a few opportunities with Jobshop, however, like the Student Ambassador scheme, I have just picked up hours as I have been available.

•

I have worked opportunities like the Graduation days and at the student club, the Venue.

•

From my knowledge, I'm not aware of when Jobshop do their recruitment, but it might be worth emailing or getting into contact with them to find this information out. I have worked a one-off at the Venue, but was not recruited until later on in the year (not in January), so it is worth asking them when recruitment starts for different work opportunities.

•

You will find some ways to contact Jobshop here, and it would be worth signing up to their newsletter if you're interested to get notified when part-time work is available.

Outside of what UKC offers, there are multiple cafes in town hiring, also join the residents group on facebook if you can as jobs are shared on there as well 🙂
