What should i pick as my third alevel

Hello,

I'm going to retake year 12 starting this coming September. I'm very excited honestly. Previously, I did Maths , Chem and Physics. I thought I wanted to do engineering because I like formula one... Needless to say, it didn't work out I struggled alot especially in physics. Tbh I wasn't getting good grades across the board. Constant Us in Physics and no higher than C-Es in chemistry and maths. I won't lie I definitely neglected physics and I wasn't organized in my opinion this lead to my downfall. Everything was wrong and I could barely stay on top of anything. I also wasn't unsure what I wanted to do, I do like engineering but when I reflect I don't believe I was a 100% confident that's what I want to pursue that.

Anyways the subjects I'm going to pick again are Maths (surprising) however I did see myself improving and I know with no more setbacks I can do so well. Secondly BTEC IT as I wish to get a degree apprenticeship in data science , data / business analyst (I did a work experience at a big company) Lastly, I'm stuck between chemistry and business alevel. I would pick chem again as I'm familiar with it however I feel as though I have moved on from any type science alevel as my mum told I cannot do chem coupled with maths again I tried to explain that this time it would be different. As I knew the content already for year 1 at least . But she told me no, so I basically ruled it out. Yesterday, she came to me saying she's think I'm best to take chemistry again and didn't properly understand my point. This only adds to the confusion. I really want to focus on maths as well I would really love an A* at the end of it. Maths is already a good alevel and it's very respectable .Doing chemistry will give me the backup options to pursue careers in engineering or healthcare. But I'm set on straight after yr13 I want to go straight and do an apprenticeship. Business because I think it will be useful and I'm genuinely interested in it I would pick econ how it interferes with the schools blocking system and it wasn't my top pick anyway.

I want this school year to be smooth as possible. I'm just unsure, chemistry is more highly regarded and could give me better options but it is hard, all alevels are hard work I'm willing to correct my mistake and do things right the second time.

What do you guys think should I pick business or chemistry?
Is Mathematics , BTEC IT & Business a better combo
Or Mathematics, BTEC IT & Chemistry

Thank you for reading

If you want to go into tech and data science, maths is kind of the only key A Level (for degrees at least; most roles in tech don't really require academic qualifications). The other 2 subjects can be anything you want, so long you get the grades in them.

Yes by all stretch of the imagination, Chemistry is probably the more respected subject but if you can't get a good grade in it then it's bit redundant. Also, I think the only type of engineering that would involve chemistry is chemical engineering which involves maths and physics more than anything i.e. it's a bit restrictive to say the least. For healthcare roles on the other hand, having chemistry in your arsenal you should be able to do at least half of the available degrees alongside Maths - many of which will require you to go through university before you're admitted.

Business Studies isn't really a required subject for any degree generally (one odd university somehow asks for it for their business related degrees though). However, the knowledge you get from the A Level would help should you wish to set up your own business later on - you will need to know other things on top but the foundational knowledge is there.

What I'm curious about is if you want to be open to engineering roles, why do BTEC in IT when BTEC in Engineering (ideally as an extended diploma, but I digress) would be a more suitable option.

Anyway to answer your question, I'm more in favour of chemistry over business studies, so long you can get a high grade in it.

Thank you for your response 🙂 I really appreciate
The school I'm attending doesn't do btec engineering next best thing is applied science however they are all extended certificates ( equivalent to one a level) which isn't bad I just feel as though doing chemistry might be better as along as I get that good grade which I'm not so sure if want to spend the next 2 years again doing that and I also wonder how the btec extended certificate competes with normal science a level in terms of secure apprenticeships (I'm not very keen on applying to uni). Do you think btec applied science is a good third subject?

I am not too familiar with BTEC in terms of application for apprenticeships I am afraid. BTEC extended certificate definitely doesn't compare to A Levels in terms of uni applications though.

If it's a degree from a top end uni that requires A Level Biology you might need to do the extra Biology A Level on top. For most degrees that do require A Level Biology though, BTEC Applied science tend to be a good substitute. You would need to check the entry requirements of each degree course to be sure though.
I am not entirely sure how well Applied Science fares for apprenticeships, but it should be generally OK for most things with the NHS.
